The first Oscars were a hotel banquet; the ceremony later moved through movie theaters and large Los Angeles auditoriums before settling at the Dolby Theatre in 2002. The Academy has announced that the 101st ceremony will move downtown to Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE in 2029. The venues below trace the major homes documented by the Academy and Academy Museum, rather than a complete year-by-year register: the available official histories do not assign every early ceremony to a specific hotel.

Where were the first Oscars held?

Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Blossom Room — 1929

The inaugural Academy Awards took place on May 16, 1929, at a banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. The Academy’s history records 270 attendees and guest tickets costing $5 at the time—historical details, not current admission or access information. Academy Awards ceremony history.

Ambassador and Biltmore hotels — the banquet years

For the first fifteen years, the Oscars were presented as banquets. After the Roosevelt, ceremonies were held at the Ambassador and Biltmore hotels. The Academy’s account does not provide a complete year-by-year allocation between the two, so a specific ceremony date cannot be reliably attached to either hotel here.

When did the Oscars move from banquets to theaters?

Grauman’s Chinese Theatre — starting with the 16th Awards

The 16th Awards marked the move to Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. That ceremony was carried on network radio for the first time, with a broadcast overseas to American GIs. The Academy says the ceremony remained at the theater for three years before moving to the Shrine Civic Auditorium. Academy Awards ceremony history.

Shrine Civic Auditorium — an intermittent home

The Shrine’s Oscar history spans decades, but it was not a continuous run. The Academy Museum lists ten ceremonies there: 1947, 1948, 1988, 1989, 1991, 1995, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2001. The museum describes the venue as opened in 1926, with seating for 6,500 in the auditorium and an adjacent ballroom able to hold 6,000. It calls the Shrine the longest-tenured site by the span of years in which it hosted ceremonies; that distinction is about the span, not the number of presentations. The Academy’s Melrose Avenue theater — 1949

The 21st Awards took place at the Academy’s own theater on Melrose Avenue in March 1949, another short stop in the move among venues. Academy Awards ceremony history.

Over the following dozen years, the Oscars alternated between the Music Center and Shrine. Where are the Oscars moving in 2029?

Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE — announced for the 101st ceremony

The Academy and AEG announced on March 26, 2026 that the Oscars will move to L.A. LIVE in downtown Los Angeles beginning with the 101st ceremony in 2029. The agreement covers ceremonies through 2039, and the venue is identified in the announcement as Peacock Theater. The Academy and AEG also announced planned theater upgrades and a red-carpet arrival area on the plaza; these are plans, not confirmation that the work is complete. Academy and AEG announcement.

Taken together, the major venue story is a progression from hotel banquets to theaters, then to a sequence of large Los Angeles auditoriums, a long Dolby Theatre era, and a scheduled downtown move. The record cited here captures those major homes, not every ceremony’s venue assignment.
