Scream 7 gives viewers reasons to suspect Stu Macher, but none of the reported trailer clues confirms that he is alive or the new Ghostface. Matthew Lillard is in the cast, and trailer coverage describes an image that appears to show Stu and a voice repeating “Surprise, Sidney.” Those details could point to Stu—or to a recording, impersonation, vision, or deliberate misdirection.
What the official premise confirms—and leaves open
Paramount’s May 21, 2026 press release describes a new Ghostface emerging in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life and targeting her daughter. It names Kevin Williamson as director and co-screenwriter, Guy Busick as co-screenwriter, and James Vanderbilt and Busick as story writers. The synopsis does not identify the killer. Paramount’s press release also lists Matthew Lillard in the cast, confirming his involvement in the film but not the circumstances of Stu’s appearance.

That distinction matters: an actor’s presence in a cast does not establish that the character is alive, wearing the mask, or even appearing in the story as a present-day person. Paramount’s verified trailer listing, dated October 30, 2025, likewise describes Sidney and her daughter as targets of a new Ghostface without naming the killer. Its tagline is “I’m gonna burn it all down.”
The reported clues pointing toward Stu
An image that appears to show Stu
In February 2026, GamesRadar described a later trailer clip shown in theaters, saying a blink-and-you-miss-it image appears to show Lillard as Stu on a computer screen. That is a report about footage shown in theaters—not proof that the same image appears in the publicly posted October 2025 trailer. A screen image could be a live video feed, an old recording, or a misleading glimpse; the report does not establish which.

“Surprise, Sidney” echoes the original film
In its account of that reported in-theater clip, GamesRadar also says Lillard’s voice says “Surprise, Sidney,” recalling Stu’s line in the original Scream. The callback makes the Stu theory feel deliberate, but the line could come from Stu himself, a recording, or someone imitating him. The clip does not settle whether Stu survived.
“This is gonna be fun” is a recognizable tease
GamesRadar reports that the first trailer ends with Lillard’s voice saying “This is gonna be fun.” Hearing him is a reason to look for Stu in the story; it is not confirmation that he is the killer. The line could be part of a taunt or a piece of promotional misdirection.

A voice that sounds like Dewey
GamesRadar also hears a line around the 1:39 mark that sounds like David Arquette’s Dewey Riley. The outlet raises the possibility that a killer is using familiar voices. That resemblance does not verify Dewey’s return, and the same uncertainty applies to the Stu-like audio: a familiar voice can be used without the person being present.
Original-film callbacks support an imitation reading
GamesRadar points to two visual echoes in the reported footage: Sidney’s daughter is restrained in a way reminiscent of Casey Becker’s boyfriend in the original Scream, and she wears Sidney’s leather jacket from Scream 2. Together with the familiar voices and Stu references, these details suggest a story built around legacy and imitation. They do not uniquely identify Stu; another killer could be recreating details from Sidney’s past to provoke or frighten her.

How to weigh the clues
| Clue | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Matthew Lillard is listed in Paramount’s cast | Lillard is involved in the film. | That Stu is alive, appears in person, or is Ghostface. |
| Reported image of Stu on a screen | The later theater clip may deliberately invoke Stu. | Whether the image is live, recorded, or misleading—or whether it appears in the publicly posted first trailer. |
| “Surprise, Sidney” and “This is gonna be fun” in Lillard’s voice | The film or its marketing is invoking Stu’s voice and history. | Who is speaking or whether Stu is physically present. |
| A line that sounds like Dewey | The audio may be designed to evoke a familiar character. | That Dewey returns; an imitation is one possible explanation. |
| Casey-like restraint and Sidney’s old jacket | The imagery connects the new threat to earlier films. | That Stu is the person behind the new Ghostface mask. |
Rotten Tomatoes lists clips titled “Matthew Lillard Is Stu (Right?)” and “Two Ghostfaces?!” The question marks are apt: clip titles package a tease, not a canonical answer. Its video index does not explain the theory.

The October 30, 2025 official trailer listing and the later clip described by GamesRadar are not interchangeable. GamesRadar’s February 2026 article said Paramount had not officially released that later clip at the time. So the apparent computer-screen image and “Surprise, Sidney” should be attributed to the reported theater footage, not presented as details every viewer can verify in the public first trailer.
Rank #4
GamesRadar’s accounts are interpretations of promotional footage, while Paramount’s official synopsis leaves the killer unnamed. The trailer material makes Stu a plausible theory, but it does not distinguish conclusively among a living Stu, a recording, an impersonator, a vision, or a fake-out. Paramount’s May 2026 release reported that the film had earned more than $214 million worldwide and was the franchise’s highest-grossing installment at that point; that is the studio’s dated figure, not an independently audited total.
