Space Jam: A New Legacy is an official follow-up to the 1996 Space Jam, carrying forward the franchise’s basketball-and-Looney-Tunes premise. Its clearest links are its “based on Space Jam” credit, Bugs Bunny and the Tunes, and a high-stakes basketball game. The digital-world plot and LeBron James’s relationship with his son Dom are specific to the 2021 film.
How is Space Jam: A New Legacy connected to Space Jam?
Warner Bros.’ official film page identifies Space Jam: A New Legacy as based on Space Jam. The 2021 film carries forward the central combination of basketball, Bugs Bunny, and the Looney Tunes, while building a new story around LeBron James and his son. Warner Bros.’ film page presents it as an animated/live-action film directed by Malcolm D. Lee.

The original film debuted on November 15, 1996, according to WarnerMedia’s 2021 anniversary announcement. That announcement reported that the original had made $230 million at the box office at launch; this is WarnerMedia’s historical figure, not a current earnings total or an independent box-office analysis. WarnerMedia’s anniversary release also describes the franchise’s intergenerational appeal as the company’s view, not as a survey finding.
What carries over from the original?
The franchise and its characters
The sequel explicitly invokes Space Jam in its official “based on” credit. Bugs Bunny and the Looney Tunes are central to its premise, connecting the new film to the animated characters at the heart of the franchise.
#1 Best Overall
Basketball as the central contest
Both films are linked by basketball and a consequential game. In the 2021 film’s official synopsis, LeBron leads Bugs and the Tunes against digitized champions in a game that is part of their effort to get home. The shared sports-and-cartoon setup is a clear continuity point; the details of the new contest belong to the sequel’s story.
What is new in the 2021 film?
LeBron James and Dom’s story
The official synopsis places LeBron’s young son Dom at the center of the stakes: father and son are trapped in digital space by a rogue AI, and LeBron must help get them home. That parent-child conflict gives the sequel a story frame distinct from its franchise connections.
A digital setting
The digital world and the rogue AI are elements of A New Legacy’s plot, not details to attribute to the 1996 film. The official synopsis describes the setting and the game LeBron must lead, but the franchise connection does not depend on treating the two films’ stories as identical.
How critics have interpreted the sequel
In a July 14, 2021 review, Michael Lee described the father-son relationship as the film’s “beating heart” and observed that some of its Warner Bros. property crossovers work better than others. That is one reviewer’s interpretation, rather than an official description or a claim of critical consensus. Read Lee’s review in The Washington Post.
