Cody Rhodes wrestled nine WWE premium live event matches in 2023, from winning the Royal Rumble to joining Jey Uso for a tag-team title victory and closing the year in WarGames. This ranking weighs narrative stakes and payoff first, then match structure, setting and crowd, and each bout’s place in Rhodes’s year-long story. The order is an editorial judgment, not an official or consensus rating.
How this ranking works
The list covers Rhodes’s nine WWE PLE appearances in calendar 2023. Solo matches, a Royal Rumble, a tag-team championship bout and a WarGames match are not directly comparable, so the ranking emphasizes what each did for the story as well as how its conflict and finish played out. Match results and context are attributed to WWE where its event pages support them. The Royal Rumble and Fastlane entries are supported by a secondary event-results index, rather than an opened official match page.
Every Cody Rhodes WWE PLE match in 2023, ranked
-
SummerSlam: Cody Rhodes defeated Brock Lesnar (August 5)
The final match in the three-bout PLE rivalry with Lesnar is the strongest payoff of Rhodes’s year. WWE records Rhodes’s victory at SummerSlam after Lesnar had taken a win at Night of Champions and Rhodes had answered at Backlash. The trilogy gave their conflict clear escalation and a decisive ending, making this the top choice when story resolution matters most. WWE’s SummerSlam recap
-
WrestleMania 39: Roman Reigns defeated Cody Rhodes (April 2)
Rhodes’s loss to Reigns is the year’s most consequential single result: it denied him the championship ending he had pursued and redirected his story into the Lesnar feud. WWE’s recap describes Bloodline involvement and frames the defeat as Rhodes being denied his desired ending. The finish makes the match a devastating story turn rather than a triumph, but its stakes place it near the top. WWE’s WrestleMania 39 recap

Backlash: Cody Rhodes defeated Brock Lesnar (May 6)
The first PLE meeting with Lesnar turned the rivalry in a different direction after WrestleMania. WWE recounts Rhodes attacking Lesnar with a chair and the ring steps before the bell, while also describing Puerto Rico’s crowd as “red-hot.” That unusual opening gave the bout immediate tension; Rhodes’s victory then established that he could survive the feud’s physical escalation. -
Survivor Series: WarGames: Rhodes’s team defeated The Judgment Day and Drew McIntyre (November 25)
WarGames made Rhodes part of a larger team story rather than a solo showcase. WWE records the winning team as Rhodes, Seth Rollins, Randy Orton, Jey Uso and Sami Zayn; Rhodes hit Cross Rhodes on Damian Priest to secure the victory. The team finish and the scale of the match give it major spectacle, though the result belongs to five wrestlers, not Rhodes alone. WWE’s Survivor Series recap

Night of Champions: Brock Lesnar defeated Cody Rhodes (May 27)
The middle chapter of the Lesnar trilogy ended with Rhodes passing out to Lesnar’s submission, according to WWE. That finish distinguished it from the pinfall wins on either side of the feud and made the defeat feel like a meaningful obstacle rather than a simple reset. It ranks below the bookend matches because it advances the arc without providing its clearest payoff. WWE’s Night of Champions recap
-
Royal Rumble: Rhodes won the Men’s Royal Rumble match (January 28)
Rhodes’s Rumble victory launched the central championship pursuit of his year by setting up his WrestleMania challenge to Reigns. Its value in this ranking comes from that story consequence: the win creates the year’s defining opportunity, even though the match is a multi-competitor contest rather than a conventional one-on-one feud bout. This result is supported here by a secondary event-results index. Event-results index

Rhodes and Uso won the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship together, giving Rhodes a notable title victory after his summer rivalry with Lesnar. The shared win is the key distinction: it is a tag-team achievement, not a singles result. The Fastlane appearance and outcome are supported here by a secondary event-results index. -
Crown Jewel: Cody Rhodes defeated Damian Priest (November 4)
Rhodes beat Priest after Judgment Day interference attempts were disrupted by Jey Uso, according to WWE’s event page. The involvement connects the match to Rhodes’s alliance with Uso and the broader Judgment Day conflict, but it has less individual story weight than the WrestleMania and Lesnar matches. Money in the Bank: Cody Rhodes defeated Dominik Mysterio (July 1)
WWE notes that Mysterio targeted Rhodes’s injured arm and that Rhodes kept Rhea Ripley at bay before winning with a sequence ending in Cross Rhodes. Those complications gave the match a clear obstacle-and-comeback structure. It ranks ninth not because the result lacked drama, but because its consequences for Rhodes’s larger 2023 story were comparatively limited. WWE’s Money in the Bank recap
What the year’s matches add up to
Rhodes’s PLE year moved from a Royal Rumble win and a WrestleMania setback into a three-match answer to Brock Lesnar, then into tag-team and faction conflicts alongside Jey Uso. The strongest matches in this ranking either reshaped that arc or delivered a clear resolution; the remaining bouts added victories and complications without carrying the same weight.
