The 2026 Best Picture nominees were Bugonia, F1, Frankenstein, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, One Battle after Another, The Secret Agent, Sentimental Value, Sinners and Train Dreams. They competed at the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026, honoring films released in 2025. The Academy named One Battle after Another Best Picture; this ranking is a separate critical judgment, not an Academy-issued order.
How this ranking works
The order weighs direction, performances, screenplay, visual and sound craft, emotional impact, originality and rewatch value. It favors films that combine strong individual elements into a coherent, affecting whole, while recognizing that different viewers will weight those qualities differently. The Academy’s official results establish the nominees and winner, not a universal ranking. Best Picture nomination voting was open to all active Academy members, according to the Academy’s nomination announcement.

Here is my order, from the least persuasive Best Picture nominee to the strongest. Every title on the list was an Oscar nominee; the ranking reflects judgment rather than a claim that any film did not deserve recognition.
How I rank the 2026 Best Picture nominees

F1
F1 lands at the bottom of this particular ranking because spectacle alone is not enough to top a field this strong. Its place here reflects the weighting of the whole-film experience—especially originality and emotional staying power—rather than a dismissal of large-scale craft. Viewers who prize propulsion and technical showmanship above intimacy may reasonably move it higher.

Bugonia
Bugonia brings an unusual premise to a lineup with several more familiar dramatic frames. That distinctiveness matters, but an audacious concept is only as strong as its execution across performance, writing and tone. It ranks below the films that, in this ordering, make their ambitions feel more fully integrated.

Frankenstein
Frankenstein has an inherently rich foundation for visual and emotional storytelling. Its position reflects the difference between impressive design and a film that feels fully alive in every dimension. It remains a noteworthy nominee, but the titles above it make a stronger overall case under these criteria.

The Secret Agent
The Secret Agent adds a distinct sensibility to a broad Best Picture field. Its presence makes this list less uniform in tone, and that range is part of what makes the nominee slate interesting. It sits in the middle here because the top ranks go to films that make a more compelling total impression by the standards used in this ranking.

Train Dreams
Train Dreams earns a higher place for the promise of a reflective, emotionally resonant experience. The ranking gives weight to films that invite contemplation as well as immediate engagement. It narrowly misses the top tier because the remaining nominees make especially persuasive cases through the balance of their craft and impact.

Marty Supreme
Marty Supreme stands out as a more singular entry in the competition. Originality can make a film memorable, but it does not automatically settle how well its parts work together. Here, its distinctive identity lifts it above the middle of the list, while the top five edge ahead on the overall combination of storytelling and craft.

Sentimental Value
Sentimental Value reaches the upper tier because emotional impact is one of the most important measures in this ranking. A film that connects on a human scale can outlast one that merely impresses in the moment. It places seventh only because the six above it make an even stronger case across the full set of criteria.

Hamnet
Hamnet ranks among the strongest nominees for its emotional potential and the force a carefully shaped drama can bring to a familiar historical world. Its high position reflects the value placed here on performance, direction and feeling working together, rather than on scale or novelty alone.

Sinners
Sinners received 16 nominations across categories, according to the Academy’s 2026 announcement. That tally is awards-season context, not a proxy for quality or audience opinion. In this ranking, the film reaches second because its combination of ambition and craft makes it one of the field’s most compelling entries.

One Battle after Another
One Battle after Another takes the top spot for the strength of its overall achievement: the film is most persuasive here when direction, performances, writing, craft and impact are considered together. It also won Best Picture at the 98th Oscars. The award supports its place in the season’s story, but the ranking rests on the critical criteria above, not on the trophy alone.
What the awards tell you—and what they do not
The Academy’s 98th Oscars results provide an official winner and nominee roster, not a ranked ballot of the ten Best Picture contenders. The Academy announced the nominations on January 22, 2026, and stated that “All active members are eligible to select the Best Picture nominees.” Sinners earned 16 nominations and One Battle after Another earned 13 across categories. Those totals show the breadth of awards recognition; they do not establish audience preference or decide which film should top a critic’s list.
