Start with the right Wowza tutorial for the product you have: Wowza Video is the hosted cloud service, while Wowza Streaming Engine is a media server you install or run in a Docker environment. For a first OBS stream, follow the Wowza Video RTMP quick start; for a self-managed setup, use the Streaming Engine trial and installation guides. The steps and playback paths are different.

First, identify which Wowza product you’re using

“Wowza” can mean two different workflows. Wowza Video is a hosted service: it accepts an encoder’s live input, processes it in the cloud, and can provide a Wowza-hosted playback page. Wowza Streaming Engine is media-server software: you install or deploy it, publish a source to an application, and configure a way to test playback.

What you need Choose Wowza Video Choose Streaming Engine
Setup approach Account and hosted service workflow Install and configure a server, or use the Docker Compose trial
Typical first source OBS sending RTMP to the connection details Wowza provides OBS, FFmpeg, a simulated stream, or webcam over WebRTC, depending on the trial path
Playback test Preview and a Wowza-hosted playback page Confirm the incoming stream in Engine Manager, then test the configured playback path
Useful starting guide RTMP live-stream quick start Streaming Engine trial options

This is a workflow comparison, not a performance comparison. If you are following a video or guide, check its product name before copying its screens or settings.

Recommended video path for a first Wowza Video stream

Use Wowza’s Quick start for an RTMP live stream in Wowza Video, updated February 24, 2025. OBS is the encoder in this workflow; Wowza Video supplies the receiving service and the connection details OBS needs.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Create the live stream in Wowza Video. Sign in to the account interface and create a live stream. Copy the generated server address and stream name or key, along with any source credentials provided.
  2. Configure OBS for a custom RTMP destination. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose a custom service, and enter the server and stream details from Wowza Video. Configure source authentication if the account’s connection details require it. Do not substitute credentials from another stream.
  3. Start the Wowza Video stream first. Follow the current Wowza interface’s start or go-live control before selecting Start Streaming in OBS. The order matters in Wowza’s documented workflow.
  4. Check the incoming signal. Confirm that Wowza Video receives the OBS input and that its preview appears. If it does not, verify the server URL, stream name/key, and authentication rather than repeatedly changing unrelated OBS settings.
  5. Test playback. Open the playback page or preview supplied for the stream and confirm picture and sound. A successful OBS connection alone does not prove that the intended playback path is working.
  6. Stop the stream when finished. Stop the live stream in Wowza Video as well as stopping OBS, and check current billing guidance for the account before leaving a stream started.

Wowza also maintains a Getting started with Wowza Video guide, but it is explicitly labeled Legacy and was updated February 8, 2024. It uses video.wowza.com; the newer RTMP quick start refers to app.wowza.com. Treat hostnames and UI labels in either guide as version-sensitive, and use the current account interface if it differs.

Choose a Streaming Engine trial route

Wowza’s Streaming Engine trial page offers several ways to publish a source. Pick based on what you want to learn; a webcam is not required for every route.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
  • What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
  • OBS: A familiar choice if you already use an encoder and want to send a live source to Engine.
  • FFmpeg: A command-line route suited to a local developer workflow or a file-based source.
  • Simulated stream: A way to exercise the Docker Compose deployment without connecting a camera.
  • Webcam over WebRTC: Choose this route if you specifically want to test a camera source. An optional USB webcam for live streaming is relevant only for this camera-based path.

For Docker, follow Wowza’s Docker Compose trial guide. For a conventional server installation, use Install and configure Wowza Streaming Engine; that page was updated July 24, 2026 and notes that version 4.9.5 added support for ARM-based Linux executables. System requirements and supported versions can change, so check the current requirements for your target operating system before installing.

Connect a source and verify it in Engine Manager

  1. Set up the Engine application and source path. Follow the trial or installation guide for the application you will publish to and the chosen source method.
  2. Enter the correct server and stream details in your publisher. Use the URL and stream name specified by your Engine setup. For RTMP or RTSP sources, Wowza says source username and password authentication is enabled by default; supply the configured credentials.
  3. Check the incoming stream in Engine Manager. Confirm the application reports the source as connected before moving to playback.
  4. Test the playback path separately. Use the playback method configured for the Engine application. Engine is the server; do not assume it automatically provides the same hosted viewing page as Wowza Video.

Wowza’s current live-source connection guide, updated September 17, 2026, covers publisher connections and the default RTMP/RTSP source-authentication behavior. The developer walkthrough by Don Kianian at Wowza, published November 12, 2025, combines Engine with Flowplayer in a local Docker proof of concept, so it is more developer-oriented than a basic hosted Wowza Video tutorial. Wowza describes OBS in that guide as “The easiest way to create a source stream”; treat this as the author’s recommendation for that walkthrough, not a comparative test.

What to check when the stream will not connect

  • No incoming source in Wowza Video: Check that the stream was started in Wowza Video, then compare OBS’s custom server and stream name/key with the current connection details. Check required source authentication.
  • Engine publisher cannot connect: Verify the server URL, application and stream name, and credentials. RTMP and RTSP source authentication is enabled by default in Wowza Streaming Engine.
  • Engine is unreachable: Review the installation guide’s operating-system requirements and firewall/network configuration for the deployment. A correct stream name cannot compensate for a blocked connection or unavailable server.
  • Source connects, but playback fails: Separate ingest from playback troubleshooting. First confirm the live source in Engine Manager or Wowza Video’s preview, then check the playback URL or method configured for that product.
  • Guide screens do not match: Check the guide’s publication or update date and whether it concerns Video or Engine. The 2020 Manager tutorial is useful for conceptual orientation, but its interface details may be dated.

For interface orientation, Wowza’s Streaming Engine Manager Basics and Live Stream Set Up dates to February 6, 2020. Use current product documentation for exact controls when its screens differ.

Stopping streams and avoiding surprise charges

Wowza’s Legacy Video getting-started guide warns that transcoding charges can accrue for a started stream even when no active input is being sent. It also states that idle streams are automatically stopped after 20 minutes. Because that statement appears in a guide labeled Legacy and updated February 8, 2024, do not rely on the 20-minute behavior as current billing policy; check the current billing information for your account and stop the stream yourself when the event is over. The newer Quick live stream with Wowza Video guide is dated February 24, 2025.
