Netflix’s Eric turns a child’s disappearance into a surreal family and crime drama. The premise and performances land, though the story’s many threads sometimes distract.

In Netflix’s six-episode drama Eric, a child’s disappearance turns a troubled puppeteer’s work into something stranger: Vincent Anderson becomes fixated on bringing to life Eric, a monster puppet his son Edgar drew, and begins to experience the character as a presence. Alan Sepinwall’s May 28, 2024 review sees a compelling premise and effective central performances, but also a series whose many storylines sometimes pull focus from the missing-child mystery.

What happens in Eric?

Set in 1980s New York, the series follows Vincent Anderson, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, and his wife Cassie, played by Gaby Hoffmann. Their relationship is already strained when their son Edgar disappears while trying to walk to school alone. Vincent, creator and chief puppeteer of the fictional children’s program Good Day Sunshine, latches onto Eric, a monster puppet Edgar had drawn. As Vincent tries to bring the puppet to life, he begins to experience Eric as a companion.

Detective Michael Ledroit investigates Edgar’s disappearance. That search gives the story its urgent emotional and crime-drama center, while Vincent’s fixation links the mystery to his unraveling family life and work. Netflix describes the project as a limited series; it has six episodes. Netflix Tudum’s series coverage provides the official premise and character framing.

Is Vincent Anderson based on Jim Henson?

No. Vincent is a fictional puppeteer, not Jim Henson, and Cumberbatch is not portraying Henson. The series invites comparison through its world of children’s television and puppetry: its setting calls to mind Sesame Street, Kermit, and Henson’s interest in puppetry beyond conventional children’s entertainment. Those echoes establish a cultural backdrop, not a biographical story.

The series also gives puppets a thematic purpose. As the fictional producer Lennie puts it: “They get to say the things that we can’t.” Eric can express something Vincent struggles to face directly, making the puppet more than a production challenge or a fantastical flourish.

What does the review find effective?

Sepinwall finds the premise unusual and compelling, and praises Cumberbatch and Hoffmann for conveying parents who are frightened and damaged by the crisis. The fictional children’s show works as an effective anchor: its bright, constructed world contrasts with Vincent’s private turmoil and the darker realities around the investigation.

Eric’s uncertain status—as an imagined ally or a presence Vincent experiences—also connects the show’s surreal element to his deterioration and coping. Rather than separating fantasy from family drama, the puppet gives Vincent’s inner life a visible form.

Why does the story feel overextended?

The central mystery shares six episodes with domestic drama, Vincent’s relationship with Eric, and wider stories about police corruption, queer life and the AIDS crisis, homelessness, addiction, and the politics of policing and public space. Sepinwall’s main reservation is that these strands do not always reinforce one another. Some feel distracting, diluting the early urgency of finding Edgar.

The show’s midseason revelation about Edgar also reduces suspense. The result, in the review’s view, is a tension between ambition and focus: the broader social material gives the 1980s New York setting scope, but the missing-child story can lose momentum as the series moves among its different registers.

Who is Eric likely to suit?

Viewers drawn to character-led drama, an offbeat premise, and a mix of crime story and surreal imagery may find the series’ contrasts rewarding. Those looking primarily for a tightly paced missing-child mystery may be less satisfied when the narrative turns toward its wider social and domestic threads. The review’s judgment is mixed rather than dismissive: the performances and central idea work, while the structure does not always bring the show’s elements together.
