Why did Roberts say he struggled as a father?
Roberts attributed his difficulty partly to drug use and what he called his own weaknesses. His account is about his perceived capacity at the time: he said he could not handle the responsibilities of parenting an infant. It should not be expanded into claims about causes or events beyond what he himself described.
What did he say about the relationship later?
In an October 2024 appearance on the Inside of You podcast with Michael Rosenbaum, Roberts described the loss of his relationship with Emma as a sadness. He said, “There really was no custody fight,” and explained that he did not consider himself deserving of physical custody. Those are Roberts’s clarifications as reported by Us Weekly.

In April 2026, while appearing on Really Famous with Kara Mayer Robinson, Roberts reflected on Emma’s birth and his emotional reliability at the time. Just Jared reported him saying, “I was not to be depended on emotionally whatsoever.” Parade reported his recollection of the birth: “It was magic, and I’ll always have that.” He also said, “I’m so proud of my daughter.”
What has Roberts said about outsiders’ view of their relationship?
In the same April 2026 interview, Roberts objected to outsiders claiming they knew the full context of his relationship with Emma.
