The outlets differed on how they described ALS’s classification, so the precise wording should be attributed rather than treated as settled.
What the report says about Eric Dane’s cause of death
Fox News Digital reported on March 2, 2026, that the death certificate it obtained listed respiratory failure as the cause of death and ALS as a secondary cause. Its headline characterized the respiratory failure as caused by ALS. Fox News Digital’s report is the outlet’s account of the certificate; the document itself was not independently reviewed here.
Why reports describe ALS differently
Us Weekly and E! News also reported details from death-certificate information, but called ALS an underlying cause rather than a secondary cause. Us Weekly and E! News therefore differ from Fox News Digital in their description of ALS’s placement. The consistent point across the accounts is respiratory failure as the reported cause and ALS as a contributing condition; the exact certificate classification remains a matter of attributed reporting.
What Dane’s family said
Dane’s family confirmed his death following ALS. In a statement reproduced by Fox News, the family said: “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS.” The statement said he spent his final days surrounded by friends, his wife and his daughters, and recognized his advocacy for ALS awareness and research.

His diagnosis and ALS context
Dane publicly announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025, the Associated Press reported. The AP’s diagnosis report documents that timeline. ALS affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord and can weaken muscles involved in breathing; the AP notes that respiratory failure is the most common cause of death among people with ALS. That general medical context does not establish further details about Dane’s individual medical course. AP’s ALS explainer provides additional background.
