Were Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart still married?
There are two different answers depending on whether “married” means their relationship or their legal status. They had separated and were no longer romantic partners. Legally, however, the divorce was never finalized: Gayheart had filed in 2018 and later asked to dismiss the petition. The Associated Press’s account of Dane’s death in February 2026 described her as his wife.
How they described their family relationship
Gayheart described the bond as: “Our love may not be romantic, but it’s a familial love,” according to the Associated Press. That distinction helps explain how the former couple could remain connected as parents and family without being a romantic couple. Gayheart also called their dynamic “a very complicated relationship, one that’s confusing for people,” the AP reported.
What is known about the reason for their separation?
The reporting cited here establishes the separation, divorce filing and later request to dismiss the petition, but does not establish a definitive private reason for the marriage ending. Neither the family trip nor Gayheart’s description of their bond provides evidence of a specific motive, so explanations beyond the reported facts would be speculation.
