Concert for Carolina turned a weather-delayed night at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium into a benefit spanning bluegrass, rock, and country. Eric Church, Luke Combs, Billy Strings, and James Taylor headlined the October 26, 2024, event, whose standout moments included Church’s collaborations with Sheryl Crow and Keith Urban and a late encore with Combs. MCA/Universal Music Group reported that the concert had raised $24,513,185 to date as of October 29, 2024.

What happened at Concert for Carolina?

Held at Bank of America Stadium on October 26, 2024, the benefit was organized in response to damage from Hurricane Helene. It was presented by Explore Asheville and the Buncombe County Tourism Development Authority. Luke Combs and Eric Church, both North Carolina natives, were joined on the bill by Billy Strings and James Taylor, whose own connection to the state was also noted in the event announcement. The announcement said proceeds, including sponsorships, would be divided between Combs and Church’s Chief Cares Foundation to administer to relief organizations. MCA/Universal Music Group’s October 7 announcement described the concert as a response to the storm’s destruction.

The planned 5:15 p.m. start was disrupted by inclement weather. According to Charlotte Observer reviewer Théoden Janes, organizers held the first performers and then asked attendees to leave the seating area. After a one-hour delay, the audience returned. Hosts Marty Smith of ESPN and Caleb Pressley of Barstool Sports introduced the show from an in-the-round stage at midfield. The long program carried on past midnight.

How the performances and setlists unfolded

Eric Church opened the show and returned for a longer set

Church began the performed portion alone with Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” In his later set, he played “Carolina” and “Drink in My Hand,” and brought out Sheryl Crow for “Picture” and Keith Urban for “Raise ’Em Up.” He also performed a medley of familiar covers. During “Carolina,” light-up Chief Cares wristbands illuminated the stands—a visual moment that connected the song to the benefit’s purpose.

Janes reported that Church introduced an initiative called “A Blueprint for the Blue Ridge,” saying it would include immediately building homes for 100 families in Avery County and surrounding areas. That is a pledge as reported from the stage, not evidence here of completed construction. Church described the concert as especially personal, saying, “I’ve never played a show that’s closer to my heart.”

Billy Strings brought a bluegrass contrast

Strings’s bluegrass set shifted the evening away from the headliners’ country-rock sound. Janes praised his musicianship; the review’s broader impression was of a deliberately varied bill rather than a single-genre concert.

James Taylor drew on familiar songs and his North Carolina ties

Taylor performed “Fire and Rain,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” and “Carolina in My Mind.” The songs gave his portion a different, more reflective character, while his connection to North Carolina added a regional note to the set.

Luke Combs closed with hits and an encore reunion

Combs came on around 11:30 p.m. and delivered crowd-pleasing favorites including “Beautiful Crazy,” “Fast Car,” and “Beer Never Broke My Heart.” After midnight, he and Church reunited for “Does to Me” and “Carolina” in the encore, a fitting return to the state-centered theme that had run through the night. The Observer’s setlist report provides additional song-by-song detail.

Why the collaborations and regional purpose stood out

The concert’s range was part of its appeal: Strings supplied bluegrass, Taylor brought a catalog associated with reflective songwriting, and Church and Combs anchored the night in contemporary country. The guest pairings made the variety tangible. Crow joining Church on “Picture” and Urban on “Raise ’Em Up” offered two distinct collaborations, while Combs’s encore with Church brought the two North Carolina-born headliners together at the end.

In Janes’s account, the atmosphere was communal and the event’s local purpose felt central, but the weather interruption and long schedule also made for a demanding, very late night. Combs described the rapid assembly of the event by saying, “This show came together 28 days ago,” while crediting the Panthers and venue with support.

How much did Concert for Carolina raise?

In a release dated October 29, 2024, MCA/Universal Music Group reported $24,513,185 raised “to date.” The same release reported 82,193 in-person attendees—then the largest concert audience in the venue’s history—and 7.1 million Veeps livestream views from all 50 U.S. states and 30 countries. These are organizer-reported figures, not an independently audited final accounting. The release also named Samaritan’s Purse, Manna Food Bank, Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest NC, Eblen Charities, and organizations supported by Chief Cares among the recipients. The October 29 release also covered lineup additions and the event’s charity-auction context.

Later reporting offers examples of relief work without presenting a complete accounting of all proceeds. In February 2025, The Charlotte Observer reported that Manna Food Bank said it had received $3.1 million since the concert and provided 4.5 million meals—equivalent to 5.4 million pounds of food—between October and December, with funding also supporting operating and rebuilding costs. The same report said Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina received $2.7 million and provided 900,000 meals after the storm with concert funds. Those figures are attributed to the organizations and reported by the Observer; they should not be read as a full audited breakdown of the benefit’s total. The follow-up report also describes housing recovery efforts.

Overall review

Concert for Carolina’s strongest feature was its breadth: four headliners with different musical identities, several memorable guest appearances, and an encore that brought Church and Combs back together. The benefit’s North Carolina focus gave the song choices and stage moments added meaning. The weather delay and after-midnight finish complicated the pacing, but the night’s scale and stated relief purpose made it more than a conventional all-star bill.
