Eric Carmen, the Cleveland-born singer-songwriter who fronted the Raspberries before scoring solo and soundtrack hits, died at 74. His wife, Amy Carmen, announced his death on March 11, 2024, saying he had died in his sleep over the preceding weekend. The family did not disclose a cause of death.
Who was Eric Carmen?
Eric Howard Carmen was an American singer-songwriter and musician whose career bridged the Raspberries’ punchy power pop and the sweeping solo ballads and film songs that followed. Born in Cleveland on August 11, 1949, he grew up in nearby Lyndhurst, Ohio. He studied violin as a child, learned piano and guitar, attended John Carroll University, and played in the local band Cyrus Erie before forming the Raspberries. The Guardian’s obituary and The Washington Post’s obituary recount his early musical path.

The Associated Press reported that 13 of Carmen’s songs charted on the Billboard Hot 100, including three Top 10 entries. That is a historical career tally reported in 2024, not a current chart measure. The AP obituary also noted the contrast between his band and solo work: the Raspberries’ energetic rock songs gave way to the more expansive ballads and soundtrack recordings that made him a household name.
Was Eric Carmen in the Raspberries?
Yes. Carmen co-founded and fronted the Raspberries, a Cleveland band formed in 1970. Its best-known lineup paired him with guitarist Wally Bryson, bassist Dave Smalley, and drummer Jim Bonfanti. The group released four albums for Capitol Records and had four Top 40 singles, according to the AP. “Go All the Way,” from the band’s 1972 debut, was its biggest hit, reaching the Top 5.

The Raspberries favored concise, melodic rock at a time when many prominent bands cultivated a more expansive or countercultural image. Carmen said in a 2017 interview quoted by AP that he wanted the band’s look to set it apart from the long-haired, bearded image common among groups of the era. In 1972, as quoted by The Washington Post, he described the band’s approach simply: “Our music is based on fun.”
The group’s second album, Fresh, was its highest-charting album, reaching No. 36, The Guardian reported. Internal disagreements brought the Raspberries’ initial run to an end in 1975. The band reunited later for a concert and a 10-date tour.

What was Eric Carmen’s biggest hit?
“All By Myself” was Carmen’s biggest solo hit. Released in 1975, it reached No. 2 in the United States in 1976. Its dramatic verse draws on the second movement of Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2; The Guardian also notes that Carmen reworked the Raspberries’ “Let’s Pretend” in the chorus. After the band broke up, he signed with Arista and began a solo career built around songs that showcased his piano playing and soaring vocals.
Did Eric Carmen sing “Hungry Eyes”?
Yes. Carmen recorded “Hungry Eyes” for the 1987 Dirty Dancing soundtrack, and The Guardian reported that it reached No. 4 in the United States. He did not write it: John DeNicola and Franke Previte wrote the song.

Its place in the film soundtrack is one part of Carmen’s broader connection to movie music. The AP reported that the Dirty Dancing soundtrack sold more than 32 million copies; that figure is a reported historical sales total, not a new measurement made for Carmen’s obituary.
Which other songs and soundtrack hits did Carmen have?
Carmen’s solo and soundtrack catalog continued into the 1980s, with several songs reaching the US Top 10:

- “Almost Paradise”: Co-written with Dean Pitchford and performed by Ann Wilson and Mike Reno for Footloose, it reached No. 7 in the United States in 1984.
- “Make Me Lose Control”: Carmen’s 1988 single reached No. 3 in the United States.
The different paths through his career are easy to hear side by side: “Go All the Way” captures the Raspberries’ compact band sound, “All By Myself” foregrounds Carmen’s piano-led ballad style, and “Hungry Eyes” places his voice in a movie soundtrack setting.
