Agência Brasil reported that his death followed problems caused by edematous syndrome, citing his son; Itaú Cultural also confirmed the date, age and hospital. A central figure in the 1960s Jovem Guarda movement, Carlos built a decades-long career as a solo artist and songwriter, much of it in partnership with Roberto Carlos.
Why Erasmo Carlos mattered to Brazilian music
Jovem Guarda was a major Brazilian popular-music movement of the 1960s. Carlos was among its defining figures, alongside Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa. Universal Music Brasil described him as one of the friends who helped create the movement. In 1965, he co-hosted the television program Jovem Guarda with Roberto Carlos and Wanderléa, bringing its music and performers to a broad audience.

His creative partnership with Roberto Carlos became one of the defining relationships of his career. The pair wrote songs together that endured well beyond the movement’s early years. ECAD, Brazil’s music-rights collection organization, reported in November 2022 that “Emoções,” co-written by the two, was the song authored by Erasmo Carlos that had been re-recorded most often. ECAD also said “É preciso saber viver,” another song from their partnership, topped its ranking of the most-played songs in Brazil over the ten years preceding the notice.
From early groups to a solo career
Born in Rio de Janeiro in 1941, Carlos joined The Boys of Rock in the late 1950s; the group was later called The Snakes. Agência Brasil reports that his first recorded composition, “Eu Quero Twist,” was recorded by Agnaldo Rayol in 1962. Carlos began his solo career in 1964 and released his first LP, A Pescaria, in 1965.

His work soon extended beyond the Jovem Guarda sound. He released albums across several decades and recorded both his own material and songs by other composers, including Caetano Veloso, Ary Barroso, Taiguara, Belchior and Gilberto Gil. Agência Brasil’s chronology includes:
- Erasmo Carlos e os Tremendões (1970) and Carlos, Erasmo (1971)
- Erasmo Carlos Convida (1980), Mulher (1981) and Amar pra Viver ou Morrer de Amor (1982)
- Apesar do Tempo Claro (1988), Para Falar de Amor (2001), Santa Música (2004) and Rock and Roll (2009)
He also appeared in films, including Roberto Carlos e o Diamante Cor-de-Rosa (1969), A 300 Quilômetros por Hora (1970) and Os Machões (1971). His career encompassed popular recordings, collaborations and screen appearances rather than a single fixed role in Brazilian music.

- Greatest Hits is a 1988 compilation album by British-American band Fleetwood Mac. It covers the period of the band's greatest commercial success, from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. The track listing for the US release differs slightly from that of other territories. It includes the 1975 track "Over My Head" but omits the 1987 track "Seven Wonders."
A body of work that kept circulating
In a notice published on November 22, 2022, ECAD said Carlos left more than 750 original compositions and more than 700 recordings registered in collective management. These are figures reported by ECAD, not independently audited totals. The organization also said more than 85% of his copyright income in the preceding ten years came from radio, shows and television, a measure of the continuing reach of his work through public performance and broadcast.
