Virginia Giuffre, also publicly known as Virginia Roberts, was a survivor of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse who alleged that Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell trafficked her to Prince Andrew and that Andrew sexually abused her when she was 17. Andrew denied the allegations. Their civil case ended in an out-of-court settlement in 2022, not a trial verdict. Giuffre died in Western Australia in April 2025, aged 41; her family and publicist described her death as suicide.

Who was Virginia Giuffre?

Virginia Giuffre was an American-born survivor of sexual abuse and a prominent accuser of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. She was also publicly identified as Virginia Roberts. A court filing hosted by the U.S. Department of Justice recounts that journalist Sharon Churcher interviewed her under the name Virginia Roberts and published stories about her account in 2011.

The filing describes Giuffre as having agreed to “waive her anonymity and tell for the first time her deeply disturbing story.” That is language in the document’s account of the reporting; it is not a court finding that every allegation described in her story was proven.

What was Giuffre’s connection to Prince Andrew?

Giuffre alleged that Epstein and Maxwell trafficked her to Andrew and that Andrew sexually abused her when she was 17. Andrew denied her allegations. These are opposing accounts; the civil case did not produce a trial verdict deciding whether the specific allegations against Andrew were true.

The civil case and its outcome

Giuffre sued Andrew in New York in 2021 over the alleged abuse. The case was settled out of court in 2022. The amount was not disclosed in the public account of the settlement, which also described a substantial donation to Giuffre’s survivors’ organization.

In the settlement statement filed with the court, Andrew acknowledged Giuffre as “an established victim of abuse,” as reported by the Associated Press. That language should not be mistaken for a trial judgment on her allegations against him: the case concluded by settlement, without a verdict.

What happened surrounding Giuffre’s death?

Giuffre died in Western Australia in April 2025, aged 41. Her family, through her publicist, described her death as suicide. The family also called her “a fierce warrior in the fight against sexual abuse and sex trafficking,” according to the Associated Press.

Contemporaneous ABC News Australia reporting said police indicated at the time that the death was not suspicious. That early indication is not the same as a final coroner’s determination. The cited public reports do not establish a final coroner’s finding.

What did police say about a later report involving Andrew?

In December 2025, the Metropolitan Police said its assessment of media reports that Andrew had asked a close-protection officer to check on Giuffre found no additional evidence of criminal acts or misconduct, and that it would not open a criminal investigation on that matter. The force’s statement concerned that specific report; it was not a ruling on Giuffre’s civil allegations against Andrew or a trial finding about them. Read the Metropolitan Police statement.
