The headline’s suggestion that Eni Aluko launched a newly confirmed attack on Ian Wright “again” is not established by the available reporting. What is documented is a 2025 dispute that resurfaced during a wider argument about who should be most visible in women’s football coverage. Aluko apologised for naming Wright in her original criticism; Wright said he could not accept the apology but wanted to move on.
What did Eni Aluko say about Ian Wright?
On 23 April 2025, former England player and broadcaster Eni Aluko appeared on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour to discuss the limited opportunities women have in football broadcasting. She argued that the number of available roles was finite and said women should not be blocked from a pathway into broadcasting in the women’s game. She also singled out Ian Wright, a former colleague, saying he should be mindful of how much he worked in women’s football. BBC Sport reported her comments and subsequent apology; The Independent later recapped the controversy.
Aluko’s point about limited opportunities was an argument about access, not a published count of broadcasting jobs or a measurement of who receives them. The reporting reviewed did not establish a quantified breakdown of women’s share of football coverage.
Why did Aluko apologise?
Aluko later said her broader concern was women’s access to coaching, broadcasting and commercial roles, but that naming Wright was wrong. In the Instagram apology quoted by BBC Sport, she wrote: “But it was wrong for Ian’s name to be raised in that conversation, and for that I sincerely apologise.” The apology addressed her decision to make Wright part of the argument; it did not withdraw her wider concern about women’s opportunities.

How did Ian Wright respond?
Wright said he was very disappointed and could not accept the apology, while also saying he wanted to move on. BBC Sport quoted him: “I can’t accept it [the apology] but I also want to move on from it.” He also described the women’s game as facing serious systemic challenges and said everyone had a role in addressing them. His statement that men had blocked the women’s game for 50 years was his account of that history, not an independently quantified finding in the reporting cited here. What changed when the debate resurfaced?
A later discussion, covered in a BBC Sport explainer, widened the argument from Aluko’s remarks about Wright to the prominence of men and women in women’s football coverage. On the 90s Baby Show podcast, Aluko argued that women should be the main faces of the women’s game and men should take a supporting role. BBC Sport quoted her saying: “I believe that women’s football should prioritise women as the faces of the sport – it’s as simple as that.”

Presenter Laura Woods criticised that position as damaging to the growth of women’s sport. Aluko responded that she wanted women to be the dominant force in the women’s game. These are competing arguments about visibility and audience growth, not settled evidence that one approach produces better results.
What is the disagreement really about?
- Visibility and pathways: Aluko’s position is that women should lead coverage of women’s football, helping ensure women have prominent roles and a visible route into the industry.
- Reach and advocacy: The counterargument, represented by Woods in BBC Sport’s account, is that prominent male supporters such as Wright can help attract audiences and grow the sport.
- Individual dispute versus structural questions: Aluko apologised for naming Wright, while Guardian columnist Suzanne Wrack argued that the episode diverted attention from representation and access. That is Wrack’s commentary, not a neutral finding. Her column was published on 1 May 2025.

Was Ian Wright left out of ITV’s Euro 2025 coverage because of the row?
No causal link is established. The Guardian reported on 26 June 2025 that ITV planned to include Aluko in its Women’s Euro 2025 pundit team and had not secured Wright. The report said channel sources insisted Wright’s absence was unrelated to his clash with Aluko. It is therefore inaccurate to state that ITV excluded him because of the dispute. The Guardian’s report provides the roster context and ITV sources’ denial.

The reporting cited here does not establish a distinct, newly dated incident in which Aluko “hit out at Ian Wright again.” It supports a renewed debate about her position on women’s football punditry, alongside the earlier criticism, apology and Wright response. The headline’s “again” should not be read as proof of a new direct exchange.
