English Teacher is a strong pick if you want a comedy about teachers rather than students: its laughs come from workplace friction, personal entanglements and the political arguments that spill into public schools. That makes “hilarious must-watch” a defensible critical verdict, not a guarantee that every viewer will respond the same way. One practical caveat: FX canceled the series after two seasons in November 2025.
What is English Teacher about?
Created by and starring Brian Jordan Alvarez, the FX sitcom follows Evan Marquez, an English teacher at a fictional Austin, Texas, high school. The official premise places him amid personal, professional and political conflicts at school; Alvarez is credited as the series’ creator, executive producer, writer and director by FX. Hulu’s series listing also describes Evan’s work and personal life as sources of recurring complications.
The setup is deliberately grounded in a school workplace. Rather than making students the sole center of the story, the show builds comedy from how teachers and administrators handle disagreements, relationships and the demands of the job.
How does the show get its laughs?
The comic engine is the collision between ordinary school business and the larger disputes surrounding it. FX’s season-two synopsis names climate change, COVID, military recruitment and student phone use among the issues the characters face. It also describes Evan trying to keep his relationship with Malcolm separate from work. Those conflicts give the series a way to turn contemporary political tensions into workplace situations without abandoning character comedy.

The ensemble gives Evan people to clash with, confide in and work alongside: Stephanie Koenig plays fellow teacher Gwen, Sean Patton is gym teacher Markie, Carmen Christopher plays guidance counselor Rick, Enrico Colantoni is Principal Grant Moretti, and Jordan Firstman plays Malcolm. Is English Teacher actually funny?
For many viewers, yes. TIME’s first-season review, published August 26, 2024, praised the show’s confident comic voice, character beats and observations about public education’s increasingly politicized climate. Its reviewer wrote, “More importantly, it’s a must-watch for anyone who yearns for television that elicits actual, audible laughs.” That is a critic’s assessment of season one, not a promise about every viewer or a review of both seasons. The qualification matters: TIME also found that some supporting characters, particularly Gwen and Rick, needed more development, and suggested the series needed time to become more balanced. That critique applies to the first season as reviewed in 2024; it should not be treated as a verdict on the show’s entire two-season run.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
It is a particularly good fit if you prefer ensemble workplace comedies to student-centered school stories, or if you enjoy sitcoms that let political disagreements generate awkward, specific comic situations. The show’s focus on teachers makes the workplace itself—not just classroom antics—a source of plot and conflict.

Before starting, consider whether a two-season run feels like enough time with this cast and premise. That is a matter of taste, but it is more useful to know the series’ endpoint than to begin expecting an ongoing show.

FX canceled English Teacher after two seasons in November 2025. TheWrap reported that FX declined to comment, so there is no confirmed network explanation for the cancellation. See TheWrap’s report for the announcement.

Hulu’s listing shows two seasons and 18 episodes, and FX points viewers to Hulu. Catalogs and access can vary by country and change over time, so check the live Hulu listing for availability where you are.
