Encanto is a Walt Disney Animation Studios musical fantasy about Mirabel Madrigal, the only child in her Colombian family without a magical gift. When the family’s magic comes under threat, Mirabel may be the person best able to help. The film’s adventure is also a story about the joys and pressures of a large extended family—and about how well relatives really understand one another.
What is Encanto about?
The Madrigals live in a magical home, Casita, in a town in Colombia. Each child in the family receives a special gift, but Mirabel does not. The film’s central conflict begins when the magic sustaining the family and its home appears to be in danger. Disney’s official synopsis frames Mirabel not simply as an outsider, but as someone who may be the family’s hope.

The premise puts Mirabel’s difference at the heart of the story without making her a passive observer: she must work out what is happening and how she can help. The film also uses the family’s supernatural abilities to distinguish its characters. Disney’s activity packet, for example, describes Isabela as able to grow plants and Luisa as possessing super strength.
Who are the Madrigals, and what is Mirabel’s role?
The Madrigals are an extended family whose gifts shape their roles in the household and community. Mirabel’s lack of a gift makes her position within that system complicated; the film’s official character framing says she is determined to prove she belongs and privately feels alone. That description comes from Disney’s educational and promotional material, rather than an independent psychological assessment.

- The film is centered on a young girl and her family in Colombia, who all have magical powers, sadly, the young girl has no powers.
Mirabel’s story is part of the film’s broader interest in family perspective. Co-director and co-writer Charise Castro Smith said, “I think from the very beginning, this movie has been interested in exploring questions of perspective.” Director and co-writer Jared Bush described the starting point as “a story about this large, extended family, the joys of family and the complexities and challenges of family.” Their comments locate the conflict in relationships as well as in the threatened magic.
What does Casita mean in the film?
Casita is the Madrigals’ living, magical house, but the filmmakers designed it to function as more than a setting. Disney’s production account describes the house as an expressive character and a visual representation of the family’s relationships; its movement and condition reflect the family’s emotional state. Director Byron Howard framed a guiding question for the story this way: “How well do we truly know our families, and how well do our families know us?”

The house’s inspiration is specific rather than a claim to represent every Colombian home. Disney says the creative team drew on traditional homes in Barichara, Cartagena and Salento, with advice from the Colombian Cultural Trust. The kitchen’s researched details included a molinillo for stirring hot chocolate, a corn grinder and La Chamba pottery.
How did Colombian culture shape the setting?
The story is set in Colombia, and the filmmakers worked with Colombian advisers throughout development. Disney reports that the team consulted a Colombian Cultural Trust early and continued collaborating with it. Producer Yvett Merino said, “There was an ongoing meeting and collaboration with them, just to make sure that we were representing [everything] correctly.”

The production also sought multiple regional perspectives rather than treating Colombia as culturally uniform. Howard said the team looked for consultants from several regions, including the coast, Cali and Bogotá. Disney’s account says the filmmakers traveled in 2018 to Bogotá, Cartagena, Barichara, Salento, Palenque and the Valle de Cocora. The fictional village draws particular inspiration from Colombia’s Coffee Region, while the wider consultation informed the production’s approach to the country’s varied settings and details.
Who made Encanto, and who wrote the songs?
Byron Howard and Jared Bush directed the film, with Charise Castro Smith as co-director. Bush and Castro Smith wrote the screenplay. Clark Spencer and Yvett Merino produced. The credited cast includes Stephanie Beatriz, MarĂa Cecilia Botero, Wilmer Valderrama, Adassa, Diane Guerrero, Mauro Castillo, Angie Cepeda, Jessica Darrow, Rhenzy Feliz, Carolina Gaitán, Ravi Cabot-Conyers and John Leguizamo.

Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the film’s eight original songs, and Germaine Franco composed the score. The songs and score are distinct parts of the soundtrack: Miranda is credited for the original songs, while Franco composed the instrumental score.
