At the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 15, 2024, Catherine O’Hara tore up the envelope as she presented Outstanding Comedy Series, then mock-protested having to choose just one nominee. The winner was Hacks.
What was Catherine O’Hara’s joke at the 2024 Emmys?
O’Hara’s gag paired a physical bit with a line about the difficulty of picking a winner. As she moved to announce the final award of the night, she ripped up the envelope, then said, as TIME reported it: “And the Emmy goes to… No, must we? Must we really choose just one winner? When all the nominees have done such wonderful, hilarious work?”

The torn envelope made her mock reluctance visible; the joke was that the nominees’ work was so good that choosing one felt unnecessary. It was a prop-based gag, not evidence that the result had changed or that the envelope named someone else.

How the presentation fit the ceremony
The ceremony was held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. O’Hara appeared with Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, and Annie Murphy in a Schitt’s Creek reunion before presenting Outstanding Comedy Series, the night’s final award. The moment joined the reunion’s affectionate tone to a quick joke about the challenge of choosing among the comedy nominees.
