In an October 2024 interview, Emma Heming Willis said her daughters had not asked about the terminal aspect of Bruce Willis’s frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and that she did not like discussing that aspect with them. Her remark was about the terminal side of the illness—not a direct statement that the girls had asked, or had not asked, specifically about their father’s death.
What Emma Heming Willis said in 2024
Speaking with Katie Couric for Town & Country on October 29, 2024, Heming Willis said: “I don’t like to speak about the terminal side of this with them, nor have they asked.” The wording concerns the terminal aspect of Bruce Willis’s illness. It should not be recast as a specific report that his daughters had not asked her about his death.
That interview described FTD as progressive and terminal and reflected Heming Willis’s comments at the time about the illness having no cure or treatment. It did not establish an individual prognosis or a timetable for Willis.
How she has described talking with her daughters
In a September 19, 2026 interview with Le Monde, Heming Willis said she did not want her daughters to grow up believing the illness was “some dark family secret that we needed to keep.” She described being honest with them in ways suited to their ages, answering what they ask, and telling them if something changes.

A Parade report published June 15, 2026, quoted her describing the balance this way: “You have to be ready to answer those questions that you feel fit for them to hear in an age appropriate way, but it must be truthful.” These later accounts describe ongoing, open conversations; they do not repeat the 2024 remark about the terminal aspect or provide a new, specific account of whether the girls asked about death.
What the diagnosis means—and what it does not tell us
The family publicly announced Willis’s aphasia diagnosis in 2022 and disclosed the more specific diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia in 2023. In the 2026 Le Monde interview, Heming Willis said he was diagnosed in 2022. These are different timelines: the date she gave for his diagnosis and the dates the family made diagnoses public.

Heming Willis has described Willis’s diagnosis as primary progressive aphasia, an FTD variant that affects language and communication. FTD can also affect behavior, executive function, and movement. Symptoms and progression vary, so one family’s experience cannot predict another person’s course.

Heming Willis’s book, The Unexpected Journey: Finding Strength, Hope, and Yourself on the Caregiving Path, shares her experience as a caregiver. It is a personal caregiving resource, not a treatment or medical guide. The Le Monde interview also attributes an estimate of approximately 60,000 people with FTD in the United States to the Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration; the article does not specify the estimate’s publication year.
