Before the Detroit Lions faced the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL wild-card round on January 14, 2024, Eminem made a playful plea to Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford: “Can you just let us have this one? Just this one!” Detroit went on to win 24–23, earning its first playoff victory in 32 years. The request was a joke, not evidence that Stafford agreed to lose.
What did Eminem say to Matthew Stafford?
In a pregame video shown on Sunday Night Football, Eminem asked Stafford to give Detroit the win. CBS Detroit and WDIV reported his line: “Can you just let us have this one? Just this one!” (CBS Detroit; WDIV ClickOnDetroit.)
The appeal played on the history between the two men: Stafford had once been Detroit’s quarterback, but was now leading the Rams against his former team.
Why did Eminem ask Stafford to let the Lions win?
Eminem tied the joke to the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI victory. He had performed in the halftime show with other rappers while Stafford’s Rams beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 23–20. Eminem’s pitch was essentially that he had helped entertain Rams fans at the Super Bowl, so Stafford could return the favor by giving Detroit this game, as CBS Detroit reported.

- Soft touch composite material
- Vibrant colored Lions logos
- Designed for rec play for all ages
- From the official football of the NFL
That framing was a bit of fan banter. Neither the plea nor the close final score establishes that Stafford agreed to throw the game.
Did Detroit beat Stafford and the Rams?
Yes. The Lions beat Los Angeles 24–23 at Ford Field on January 14, 2024. The Associated Press reported that the victory ended Detroit’s nine-game postseason losing streak and gave the franchise its first playoff win in 32 years, dating back to January 5, 1992.
