Spoilers for the Season 5 finale: Emily does not end the season with a confirmed partner. She breaks up with Marcello rather than move to Solitano, then receives Gabriel’s postcard inviting her to Greece. Creator Darren Star hopes she accepts—but says he is not sure she will.

Why Emily ends things with Marcello

Season 5 takes Emily between Paris and Italy, with Rome and Venice among its settings. Netflix’s Season 5 guide frames Marcello as a significant new relationship while keeping Emily’s connection with Gabriel unresolved.

Marcello’s family offers Emily the chance to lead marketing for the Muratori fashion house. Taking the role would mean moving to Solitano and choosing a quieter life over Paris and her work with Agence Grateau. Emily has feelings for Marcello, but she does not want the life that comes with the move. Star told TheWrap that “living with Marcello was just not the life that she wanted.”

That makes the breakup a decision about the future Emily would have to choose, not proof that she never cared for Marcello. Lily Collins has described Marcello’s place in the story as tied to Emily’s desire for “a better work-life balance.”

What Gabriel’s postcard means—and what it does not

After Emily returns to Paris, Gabriel sends her a postcard inviting her to meet him in Greece. It leaves a door open between them, but the finale does not show Emily accepting the invitation or establish that they are back together.

Star told TheWrap, “I hope Emily says, ‘yes’ — I’m not sure she will.” His answer is a personal hope, not a confirmation of Emily’s next move. The showrunner also said the story should follow the characters organically rather than choose a destination first: “Really it’s all about organically, where does the story take the characters, rather than thinking about a place first.”

Where Mindy and Alfie stand

Emily is not the only character facing romantic uncertainty. Mindy accepts Nico’s proposal, an impulsive response to a fantasy she has held for a long time. Her connection with Alfie remains a complication.

Star described Mindy and Alfie as “a good fit and a bad fit” because both are fiery and similar. That tension leaves their relationship unsettled even as Mindy takes a major step with Nico.
