For a first listen to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, start with “Lucky Man” or “From the Beginning” for the concise, melodic side, then move to the ambitious suites “Tarkus” and “Karn Evil 9.” This ten-song guide balances those entry points with live performance, classical adaptations and instrumental showpieces. It is a considered introduction, not a definitive ranking.
10 essential ELP songs
-
“Lucky Man”
A direct, vocal-led entry point from Emerson, Lake & Palmer’s 1970 self-titled debut. The band’s official release page lists it as the album closer, with a running time of 4:37. Its concise shape makes a useful contrast with the group’s extended works.

“Tarkus”
The 20:59 title suite from the 1971 album is ELP’s clearest example of the extended, multi-part form. Its seven sections—“Eruption,” “Stones of Years,” “Iconoclast,” “Mass,” “Manticore,” “Battlefield” and “Aquatarkus”—move through sharply contrasting episodes rather than following a conventional verse-and-chorus structure. The official album page dates the release to 4 June 1971.
-
“From the Beginning”
One of ELP’s most accessible songs, this *Trilogy* track pairs Greg Lake’s vocal with a gentler, more intimate arrangement than the band’s long suites. The official ELP history identifies it as the group’s highest-charting US single; Carl Palmer’s official discography gives its Billboard Hot 100 peak as No. 39.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Deluxe Edition)[2 CD]- Deluxe Edition of Emerson, Lake & Palmer's self-titled 1970 debut album, featuring the 2012 remaster of the album with core tracks such as, "The Barbarian," "Take a Pebble," "Knife-Edge," "The Three Fates," "Tank" and "Lucky Man" with improved clarity and balance
-
“Pictures at an Exhibition”
ELP’s live rock adaptation of Modest Mussorgsky’s piano suite shows how the trio could turn classical material into a dramatic band performance. Recorded at Newcastle City Hall in 1971, it is a substantial live work rather than a compact song. The band’s official timeline documents the live release.
-
“Hoedown”
Also from *Trilogy*, “Hoedown” reworks a piece by Aaron Copland into a brisk instrumental showcase for the trio. Carl Palmer’s official discography describes it as one of ELP’s most popular live songs, making it a good pick for listeners who want the band’s instrumental energy without committing to a suite-length track.
Rank #2
Trilogy (Expanded Edition)[2 CD]- Originally released in 1972, Trilogy marked a high point in Emerson, Lake & Palmer's catalog
-
“Trilogy”
The title track of the 1972 album offers another window into ELP’s long-form studio writing, distinct from the narrative sweep of “Tarkus.” It gives the selection a second album-length composition outside the band’s most famous suite. The official ELP history records *Trilogy* at No. 2 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 5 on the US Billboard 200.
-
“Karn Evil 9”
The nearly 30-minute composition on *Brain Salad Surgery* is one of ELP’s largest-scale works. Its signature opening lyric, “Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends,” introduces a theatrical piece built for extended instrumental passages as well as vocal sections. The band’s official timeline describes it as nearly 30 minutes long.

-
“Still…You Turn Me On”
This compact *Brain Salad Surgery* song is a useful counterweight to “Karn Evil 9.” Its more melodic, song-led approach shows that the album’s ambition did not rule out concise writing. Carl Palmer’s discography includes it among the album’s memorable tracks.
-
“Jerusalem”
Another *Brain Salad Surgery* track, “Jerusalem” adapts Hubert Parry’s setting of William Blake’s poem into ELP’s distinctive rock arrangement. It extends the classical thread in this selection while remaining much shorter than the band’s major suites. The track appears in the official member discography and in Apple Music’s ELP catalog.

The songs are spread across several albums; no single album contains all ten. The live *Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends* has a documented vinyl and CD history in Carl Palmer’s discography, but it is not a substitute for the original albums containing these studio selections. Check a release’s track list and edition before buying. Apple Music’s current artist page surfaces some ELP tracks as top songs, but that presentation is neither an objective ranking nor a guarantee of availability in every country.
