The episode’s strongest confirmed draw is the contrast between an old-fashioned crossword enthusiast and Carrie Preston’s unconventional investigator.
What happens in “Murder Six Across”
In the Season 3, Episode 13 synopsis, CBS says the famed editor of the daily puzzle is murdered at an annual crossword championship, prompting Elsbeth to enter the world of elite puzzle solvers to find the killer. That premise gives the investigation a focused setting: a competitive community organized around words, patterns and exact answers.

Steve Buscemi plays Simon, whom a CinemaBlend interview report by Laura Hurley describes as an old-fashioned crossword puzzler. Hurley also reports that frustration with slang and an unrequited crush on a fellow puzzler drive Simon toward murder. Those details frame the character, but the episode’s specific clues, method and resolution require viewing; the available official synopsis does not establish them.
Why the Buscemi–Preston pairing is the hook
The central performance question is how Simon’s traditional puzzle sensibility holds up when Elsbeth applies her own investigative pressure. The title’s “meets his match” phrasing points toward that contest, but whether it lands depends on the actual exchanges, comic timing and how the episode uses the championship setting—not simply on the casting.
#1 Best Overall
Preston offered an actor’s perspective in Hurley’s CinemaBlend report. She said Buscemi had asked his agents about appearing on Elsbeth, and recalled how ready, focused and kind he was on set. Her description of his approach complicates the intimidating or villainous screen personas some viewers may associate with him; it is a behind-the-scenes impression, not a substitute for judging his performance in the episode.
Preston also praised watching Buscemi handle the pressure Elsbeth puts on people, comparing the experience to “watching a fly get pinned to a wall, flailing around.” She called each take “exquisite to watch.” That is a vivid account of the intended dramatic dynamic from someone in the scene, rather than independent critical consensus. The episode itself has to show whether the verbal sparring and comic tension make the contrast work.

- An alcoholic ex cop finds a woman on the roadside, left for dead. He offers to find the killer pro bono as P.I. Her granddad hires him. Things get nasty.
What the crossword setting can—and cannot—tell you
An annual championship offers a natural environment for a mystery about a puzzle editor and elite solvers. It also creates a clear review test: does crossword culture shape the investigation and the humor, or is it mostly a backdrop? The official premise establishes the setting and Elsbeth’s undercover entry into it, but not how fairly the clues are presented or how closely the mystery’s solution follows from them.
For viewers deciding whether the episode suits them, the premise signals a case built around a specialized hobby and a guest performance. It does not, on its own, establish the pace, the balance between comedy and murder, or whether the ending feels earned. Those are the points to assess while watching rather than infer from the synopsis or interview.
