Elle Macpherson said she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, underwent a lumpectomy, declined chemotherapy and later described herself as in clinical remission. Her account, reported in 2024 in connection with her memoir, does not provide enough clinical detail to judge her treatment or draw conclusions for anyone else.
What Elle Macpherson disclosed
In a September 2024 report, The Guardian reported that Macpherson said she was diagnosed in 2017 with HER2-positive, oestrogen-receptor-positive intraductal carcinoma. She said she had a lumpectomy, declined chemotherapy and was in clinical remission. The disclosure appeared alongside coverage of her memoir, Elle: Life, Lessons, and Learning to Trust Yourself.
Macpherson described the diagnosis as “a shock” that was “unexpected,” “confusing” and “daunting,” and said it prompted her to seek a solution that felt right to her. She also said: “Saying no to standard medical solutions was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. But saying no to my own inner sense would have been even harder.” These are her reported reflections, not a complete medical history.
She did have surgery; the public account leaves major questions unanswered
A lumpectomy is surgery, so it would be inaccurate to say Macpherson refused all surgery. The Guardian’s follow-up, published September 4, 2024, noted that public reports did not establish important details of her case, including the lesion’s size or grade, whether it was found through screening, whether gene-expression profiling was used, or the full details of her conventional and complementary care.

In that follow-up, breast cancer surgeon Professor Chris Pyke explained that intraductal disease can be non-invasive and that treatment decisions may depend on factors such as extent and grade. His comments describe general clinical considerations; they do not establish what treatment was appropriate for Macpherson. Her reported diagnosis and remission status cannot, on their own, show why her treatment was chosen or how any particular treatment affected her outcome.
Why her decision is not a guide to another person’s care
Breast cancer is not one uniform condition, and a celebrity’s account cannot substitute for the pathology, investigations and clinical advice relevant to an individual. Breast Cancer Network Australia said that “everyone’s diagnosis and every treatment path is unique and shaped around their individual diagnosis,” and urged people to seek trusted, evidence-based information and speak with their healthcare professionals and treatment team.

For someone facing a diagnosis, the useful questions are about their own case: what the pathology shows, what the proposed treatments are intended to do, what benefits and risks apply, and what alternatives are supported by evidence. Those questions belong with qualified clinicians who can review the person’s records. Macpherson’s public account does not answer them for other patients.

Practices used alongside medical care to support comfort or wellbeing are not the same as therapies used instead of treatment intended to manage or cure cancer. The Guardian’s 2024 summary of Cancer Research UK distinguishes complementary approaches, which may help some people feel better, from alternative therapies promoted as cures; it notes that such claimed cures are unsupported and may carry risks or interfere with conventional care.

ABC News, in a report published September 4 and updated September 5, 2024, quoted Cancer Council Australia describing alternative therapies promoted as cancer cures as unproven and not scientifically tested, and warning they may cause harm when used instead of conventional treatment. A supportive practice or lifestyle measure should not be treated as evidence that cancer has been treated or cured.
