Harper’s Bazaar named Ella Emhoff a fashion icon in 2022. Sam Hine, her boyfriend at the time, agreed, saying her individuality was what made the label fit. Emhoff said the recognition surprised her; later reporting says the couple separated in summer 2023.
Why was Ella Emhoff called a fashion icon?
The recognition came from Harper’s Bazaar in 2022. Emhoff described it as surprising. The label was an editorial accolade, not an official title or an objective measure of influence.
Emhoff’s fashion identity is tied to her work and interests as a model and designer, including knitwear and textiles. A 2021 Vanity Fair profile covered those creative interests. In a later interview reported by The Washington Post on December 1, 2023, she discussed her modeling work and fashion advice.
What did Sam Hine say about Ella Emhoff being an icon?
Hine explained his agreement by pointing to Emhoff’s independence and individuality. As quoted in a People interview and relayed by Yahoo Entertainment and The Standard, he said: “She does herself and that’s the message. She is a true individual. And that’s the most important. That’s what being an icon really is.”

That was Hine’s personal view of what the recognition meant, not an official definition of a fashion icon. A September 2021 Vanity Fair profile identified him as a GQ editor.

No. They were dating when Hine’s comments were reported in 2022. The Standard’s later profile says they parted ways in summer 2023, so Hine is best described as Emhoff’s former boyfriend in present-day coverage.
