Why did Elizabeth Taylor marry Richard Burton twice?
The public timeline establishes that Taylor and Burton married in 1964, divorced in 1974, remarried in 1975, and divorced again in 1976. It does not establish one definitive private motive for either decision. The chronology is clear; reducing it to a single explanation would go beyond what those dates can show.
For readers interested in their relationship beyond the marriage dates, TIME’s 2011 retrospective on Furious Love discusses the 2010 collection of letters between Taylor and Burton.

John Warner and Larry Fortensky
John Warner
Taylor married John Warner on December 4, 1976, several months after her second divorce from Burton. Their marriage ended in divorce in November 1982.
Larry Fortensky
Taylor married construction worker Larry Fortensky on October 6, 1991. Their marriage ended in divorce on October 31, 1996, according to the estate timeline. The years between Warner and Fortensky mark a substantial break between her seventh and eighth marriages.
What the timeline does—and does not—tell us
The record gives a straightforward count, sequence, and set of dates: eight marriages to seven men, with Burton the repeated husband and Todd the husband whose death ended the marriage. A timeline cannot, by itself, explain Taylor’s personal reasons for marrying or divorcing. Each relationship had its own circumstances, and the public chronology should not be mistaken for a complete account of her private life.
