Hasselbeck’s January 14 post told Behar to “simmer down off my friend.” One important distinction: TV Insider reported that Behar did not specifically call Underwood “un-American” on The View; Hasselbeck used that characterization to describe what she saw as the implication of Behar’s remarks.
Why Joy Behar criticized Carrie Underwood’s decision
Underwood agreed to perform “America the Beautiful” at Trump’s January 20, 2025, inauguration. In a statement, she said she was honored to sing and hoped the event could be part of a moment of unity.

On The View, Behar questioned how Underwood could say she loved her country while performing at Trump’s event. Behar described Trump as a convicted felon who, in her opinion, wanted to destroy the country. Her reported point was the tension she saw between Underwood’s expression of patriotism and her decision to sing at the inauguration—not a direct statement that Underwood was “un-American.” TV Insider’s report and Fox News’s report recount the exchange.
What Elisabeth Hasselbeck said about Behar
Her January 14 post
Hasselbeck wrote on X: “That @TheView @JoyVBehar needs to simmer down off my friend.” TV Insider also reported that Hasselbeck posted an Instagram Story calling Underwood an “INCREDIBLE WOMAN” and saying Behar could learn from her strength. TV Insider and Mediaite reported the post.

Her later argument on Hannity
In a later interview with Sean Hannity, Hasselbeck argued that Behar’s remarks treated Underwood as un-American. She pointed to Underwood’s patriotic public image and charitable support for military members and veterans. That “un-American” wording was Hasselbeck’s characterization of Behar’s position, not a direct quote from Behar on The View. Fox News’s headline used the label, while its account described Behar’s reported question about loving the country while normalizing Trump.
What Carrie Underwood said about performing
Underwood’s statement framed her choice in terms of patriotism and unity: “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”

Did Joy Behar call Carrie Underwood “un-American”?
Not in the remarks on The View reproduced in the contemporaneous reports cited here. Behar questioned how Underwood could say she loved her country while normalizing Trump. Hasselbeck interpreted and criticized that position as implying Underwood was un-American. The distinction matters because the phrase appears in coverage of Hasselbeck’s response, but should not be presented as Behar’s direct wording.
Whoopi Goldberg reportedly said on The View that Underwood had the right to decide whether to perform, while adding that this did not mean Goldberg was especially interested in watching.
