Elevation sets up a clean survival-thriller hook: after a creature invasion, a father and two women must leave the relative safety of the Rocky Mountains to save a boy. The premise gives Anthony Mackie, Morena Baccarin and Maddie Hasson a reason to face danger together, but the film’s appeal depends on whether its familiar monster-movie setup is enough for you. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus is that the scenery and Mackie’s performance lift the film somewhat, while its familiar approach limits its potential.
What is Elevation about?
Directed by George Nolfi, Elevation is a 2024 science-fiction action thriller. Its spoiler-light premise places survivors in the Rocky Mountains after creatures invade. Will, played by Anthony Mackie, joins Nina (Morena Baccarin) and Katie (Maddie Hasson) on a dangerous journey to save a young boy.

Disney+ describes the survivors’ refuge as a settlement above 8,000 feet and the expedition as a trip below “The Line.” That boundary gives the story a simple survival question: how much risk can people accept when staying safe means leaving someone behind?
Does the monster-thriller premise deliver?
The setup is easy to grasp, and the mountain setting gives the film a clear visual identity. But a strong premise is not the same as a fresh or especially forceful monster movie. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus calls out the scenery and Mackie’s performance as strengths, while judging the thriller too derivative to reach its potential.
#1 Best Overall
That is a useful expectation to bring to the film: it may work for viewers who want a compact, straightforward creature-survival story, but the available evidence does not support pitching it as a genre reinvention. This review is based on published synopsis and reception information rather than a first-hand viewing, so it does not make claims about individual scenes or the creatures’ specific behavior.
What have critics and audiences said?
On Rotten Tomatoes, the film had a 54% Tomatometer from 57 critic reviews, with an average review score of 5.50/10. Its Popcornmeter showed 80% from 250+ verified ratings. These are platform aggregates, not a representative survey of all viewers: the Tomatometer measures the share of approved critics who rated it positively, while the Popcornmeter reflects verified ticket-purchase users who rated it at least 3.5 stars. Both figures can change as ratings are added.
Rank #2
The gap suggests that verified audience raters were more positive than critics in that snapshot, but it cannot tell you why individual viewers liked or disliked the film. Rotten Tomatoes’ critics consensus reads: “Beautiful scenery and a solid star turn from Anthony Mackie raise Elevation up to an extent, but this sci-fi thriller is too derivative to reach the peak of its potential.”
