Former Los Angeles Lakers center Elden Campbell died at 57 after going fishing on the ocean, according to a statement from his family. Early reports said the cause was not known; ESPN later reported that Campbell drowned after a medical emergency, citing a family member and a Broward County official.
What was reported about Elden Campbell’s death?
The Los Angeles Times reported Campbell’s death on December 2, 2025, and quoted his family saying: “A man of God, he passed doing what he loved; fishing out on the ocean, enjoying his idea of an ideal day.” The family’s statement described the outing and his love of fishing; it did not identify a medical cause of death. At the time of that report, the cause was unknown. The NBA-hosted Athletic report on December 3 likewise said no cause had been given. ESPN reported on December 4 that Campbell died by drowning after a medical emergency while fishing, citing a family member and a Broward County official. Campbell’s Lakers and NBA career
Campbell played nine seasons with the Lakers during a 15-season NBA career. Los Angeles selected him 27th overall in the 1990 draft after he starred at Clemson. He later won an NBA championship with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. NBA.com/The Athletic

Clemson’s February 2026 game notes list Campbell as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 1,880 points and credit him as a three-time All-ACC player. Clemson Tigers
