Ek Thi Begum has a strong crime-revenge premise: after her husband is killed, Ashraf turns against the Mumbai underworld he wanted to leave. But the series’ familiar gangster plotting and long first season blunt the force of that transformation. The Envoy Web’s review finds the 14-episode run overlong, while Scroll.in’s review describes its revenge as “an overcooked dish.” Period detail is a more consistent strength than narrative freshness.
What is Ek Thi Begum about?
Ek Thi Begum is a 2020 MXPlayer Originals crime drama set in 1980s Mumbai. Apple TV describes Ashraf, also known as Sapna, as the wife of Zaheer, whose killing sets her on a path of revenge against the underworld empire. The opening conflict involves the gangs led by Zaheer and Maqsood; Zaheer tries to leave that life, but a rivalry involving local gangster Nana Mhatre and corrupt police ends with his death. Ashraf then pursues justice and vengeance through a compromised system.
Anuja Sathe plays Ashraf, Ankit Mohan plays Zaheer, Ajay Gehi plays Maqsood, Rajendra Shisatkar plays Nana Mhatre, and Abhijeet Chavan plays Inspector Tawde, according to The Envoy Web’s review.
Why does the series fail to fire?
A revenge arc that feels familiar
The central reversal—from a loving wife to a woman taking on the forces that killed her husband—offers clear dramatic stakes. The difficulty, as the reviews see it, is that the gangster and revenge elements do not develop into a sufficiently fresh story. The Envoy Web’s Pradeep Kamadana calls the show a hangover from earlier films and series. Scroll.in’s Nandini Ramnath, in a review whose headline calls revenge “an overcooked dish,” describes the premise as both fantastic and familiar and says the series adds little to the gangster canon in popular culture.

Fourteen episodes test the premise
The Envoy Web argues that the 14-episode first season tests viewers’ patience. That length matters because the show’s central engine is a revenge campaign: when the plotting feels familiar, extended runtime can make the journey seem slower rather than more involving. The criticism is not that Ashraf’s story lacks room for development, but that the series does not use that room to deliver enough novelty or momentum.
Ashraf’s struggle competes with her presentation
Kamadana also argues that the lead performance is constrained by the emphasis on Ashraf’s sensual side over her struggle. That is a criticism of how the character is framed, not a denial of the premise’s potential. A story about a woman navigating criminal power and a compromised legal system needs her choices and agency to carry the drama; the review suggests the series does not keep that struggle at the center consistently enough.

What works: the period recreation
The Envoy Web singles out the period production design, including vintage cars, costumes and props. Those details help establish the 1980s setting and give the show a tangible visual identity, even where the plot feels less distinctive. The review’s overall judgment is mixed rather than dismissive: fans of revenge stories may enjoy it, while viewers looking for compact pacing or a novel take on the gangster genre may find it a slog.
Is Ek Thi Begum based on a true story?
Apple TV labels the story “inspired by true events,” and The Envoy Web reports that its plot is heavily inspired by a story in S. Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. Those descriptions establish an inspiration, not a scene-by-scene factual account. The available listings and reviews do not verify which events or characters correspond directly to historical people, so it is more accurate to treat the series as dramatized crime fiction with a reported real-world inspiration.

Verdict: who should watch Ek Thi Begum?
Choose Ek Thi Begum if you are drawn to a woman-led revenge story, Mumbai underworld drama and detailed period recreation, and are comfortable with a long season. If brisk pacing or a fresh addition to the gangster genre is your priority, the critical case is less encouraging: the reviews point to familiar plotting and a story that takes too long to make its premise pay off.
