Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew disclosed on air on 6 September 2024 that she had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML). She said she felt positive and expected to come through the experience stronger; that was her personal outlook, not a medical prognosis.
What Edwina Bartholomew revealed on Sunrise
Bartholomew made the announcement during a live Sunrise segment on Friday, 6 September 2024. She said she had learned of the diagnosis in July. In her on-air remarks, she said: “I have been diagnosed with cancer. That’s a shock to say and hard to say.” 7NEWS reported her remarks, while ABC News identified the cancer as chronic myeloid leukaemia.
She described CML as treatable with a daily tablet and spoke positively about recovery. At the time, she said she planned to take time off during September and then return to work a few days a week. Those plans were reported in the days after the announcement and should not be read as a description of her current work schedule.
How she said the diagnosis was found
Bartholomew said routine blood tests, following other health checks, showed abnormal levels. She used the announcement to urge viewers, particularly mothers who tend to care for others first, to look after themselves and check in with a doctor. As she put it: “Please, particularly for mums who always take care of everyone else, please take care of yourself too. And just check in with your doctor.” This recounts her experience; it is not a screening schedule or testing recommendation for everyone.
What chronic myeloid leukaemia is
CML is a cancer affecting the blood and bone marrow. The ABC’s announcement coverage and explainer, which attributes its medical information to the Leukaemia Foundation, notes that early CML may cause no symptoms. Diagnosis involves blood and bone marrow samples. Treatment commonly includes clinician-directed tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), but care depends on the phase of the disease and individual factors, including age and general health. Many people need long-term medication to keep CML under control. These general points do not establish what treatment or outlook is right for any particular person.
What was reported after the announcement
In an interview published on 19 September 2025, WHO reported that Bartholomew was continuing to work and described lifestyle changes and ongoing medication. This is her later personal account, not an independent medical assessment of her condition or prognosis.

The Leukaemia Foundation’s profile identifies Bartholomew as a National Ambassador who joined in 2025. Her advocacy has focused on support for people with blood cancer, including those living outside major cities. In the profile, she described her hope of helping build a stronger network of care across Australia for people during diagnosis, treatment and life after cancer.
