Murphy’s earlier comments help explain how the two projects came into view, but they are not a current release update. In a June 2024 interview with Collider, as reported by Variety, he said recording for Shrek 5 had begun and that he would work on Donkey next. His suggestion then that the sequel might arrive in 2025 was only an estimate; the studio’s later official schedule is June 30, 2027.
When does the Donkey movie come out?
The Donkey spin-off is reported for June 30, 2028. Variety and TheWrap reported the date in June 2026. Unlike Shrek 5’s date, it is not confirmed by an official studio listing in the available announcements.

The reports do not establish further plot details, so claims about particular characters or story events should be treated cautiously.

What’s changed since Murphy’s earlier update?
In 2024, Murphy said, “We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago,” and, “Shrek is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie,” according to Variety’s account of the Collider interview. Those remarks predate the current schedule. The sequel now has an official 2027 date, while the spin-off has a 2028 date reported by trade publications.
