Ed Sheeran’s manager Stuart Camp said in 2020 that Sheeran’s former management had urged him to drop his looping pedal, dye his ginger hair black and give up rapping. The account was reported by PerthNow on 5 October 2020; it is Camp recounting the advice, not a direct statement from the former management.
What was Ed Sheeran reportedly told to change?
PerthNow quoted Camp saying: “He had to drop the looping pedal, dye his hair black and give up the rapping.” The three-part advice concerned Sheeran’s live setup, appearance and music. The report attributed the recollection to Camp, who discussed it on the Straight Up podcast.

PerthNow’s 5 October 2020 report is the source for the quoted account. RTÉ published a related report, updated 6 October 2020, headlined “Ed Sheeran told to dye his hair to become a star.”
What did Sheeran say about his ginger hair?
In a 2014 interview with The Guardian, Sheeran described the hair as part of what made him memorable: “Having orange hair made me memorable. You remember the short, chubby ginger kid.” That is Sheeran’s own perspective on his image; it is separate from Camp’s later account of what former management advised.
