ECAD distributes royalties to eligible music rightsholders in Brazil according to the calendar for the segment in which music was used. There is no single payment date: distribution depends on collection, captured and identified use, and current repertoire and affiliation details. Music users’ payments to ECAD are a separate process.

When does ECAD pay royalties?

ECAD distributes royalties monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or annually, depending on the music-use segment. Check the current ECAD distribution calendar for the segment relevant to the performance; a performance does not guarantee an immediate payment.

Live and mechanical uses may fall into different distribution segments and therefore have different schedules and rightsholder recipients. ECAD’s statement to the affiliated associations details captured songs, segments, and earnings. Each association decides how its members can view that information.

What must happen for a royalty to be distributed?

ECAD can distribute only amounts it has collected. Its FAQ explains: “The channel or venue that played your music must pay the copyright royalties to ECAD, because we can only distribute what is actually collected.” Payment also depends on the music use being captured or reported and the rightsholder’s eligibility and repertoire information being in order. See ECAD’s guidance on when royalties are paid.

#1 Best Overall
  • The music user has paid the amount due for the use.
  • The use has been captured or reported in the relevant segment.
  • The rightsholder is affiliated with one of the seven ECAD-affiliated associations.
  • The work and recording information in the repertoire is current and sufficient to identify the rightsholders.

How can a rightsholder check whether money is due?

  1. Contact the association representing you in ECAD’s collective management system and ask whether it shows amounts awaiting distribution.
  2. Check that your repertoire and registration details are up to date with the association.
  3. Ask whether the use was captured and whether the relevant music user has paid ECAD.
  4. Compare the use with the current distribution calendar for its segment.

If a captured work or recording cannot be matched to registered repertoire, ECAD says the amount can remain pending identification until the match is made. The association can explain its member statement and whether a particular credit is pending.

How are collected royalties allocated?

ECAD’s FAQ, accessed October 8, 2026, states that the allocation is 85% to authors, performers, and other rightsholders; 6% to collective management societies for operating expenses; and 9% to ECAD for administration. The FAQ does not state when those percentages were published. ECAD also described the same allocation in a May 2, 2023 article.

Share Recipient or purpose
85% Authors, performers, and other rightsholders
6% Collective management societies’ operating expenses
9% ECAD administration

What is an ECAD charge, and how does a music user pay?

ECAD—the Escritório Central de Arrecadação e Distribuição—is a private, nonprofit organization that collects royalties for rightsholders when music is performed publicly. Brazil’s Ministry of Culture explains that the fees are established through the ECAD collective system under copyright rules, rather than being a government tax. ECAD then distributes amounts actually collected through the applicable segments and calendar. See the Ministry of Culture copyright FAQ.

ECAD’s December 26, 2022 payment article says payment is made by boleto: continuous use is billed monthly, while a specific use such as a show can be billed once. It lists factors in fee calculation that include the type and degree of music use, business activity, location, socioeconomic region, and music’s importance to the business. Because procedures and payment options can change, confirm a current bill through ECAD’s official user channel or local office.

Check a boleto or request a duplicate

The December 2022 article says a free duplicate can be requested through the Canal do Usuário or ECAD’s virtual assistant. It identifies the beneficiary name as “Escritório Central de Arrecadação e Distribuição – Ecad” and names Bradesco as issuer. Those are details from that dated guidance, not a substitute for checking a specific current charge. Verify the boleto with ECAD’s current channel or a listed local unit before paying, especially if a payment request seems unexpected.

Can online music use require a licence?

ECAD’s digital-services guidance says that making music publicly available through a website, app, streaming platform, or other service may require licensing regardless of whether the service earns revenue. It identifies the party transmitting or making the music available as responsible for payment. For online services, ECAD says relevant criteria include music’s role, whether the site is commercial or institutional/promotional, and the form of use, such as background music, podcasting, or webcasting. Commercial website calculations may be tied to gross revenue, subject to a minimum UDA under the applicable rules.

ECAD’s published guidance generally treats the platform, rather than the person posting a social-media video, as responsible for licensing the public musical performance in that context. Platform arrangements and regulations can change, so consult the current regulation for a specific use.
