Easy-to-Use Video Recording Software for YouTube: Loom vs. OBS

Loom offers a guided record-edit-share workflow; OBS Studio is free and more configurable. Choose based on what you need to capture and how much setup you want.

For a guided screen-and-camera recording you can edit and share by link, start with Loom. For free local recording, more control over sources, and room to build a more involved production setup, choose OBS Studio. “Easiest” depends on what you need to record: Loom simplifies the recording-and-sharing workflow, while OBS is more flexible but can take longer to learn.

Choose by the video you want to make

Your need Good starting choice Why
Screen tutorial or presentation, with camera and quick link sharing Loom It offers screen, camera, and microphone recording with editing and sharing features.
Gameplay, multiple inputs, layered scenes, or detailed audio control OBS Studio It can combine sources such as displays, windows, webcams, capture cards, images, and text, and includes an audio mixer with filters.
A basic screen capture on a Mac Built-in screen recorder Loom’s Mac page describes opening macOS screen recording with Command + Shift + 5; consider a dedicated app if you also need camera capture, editing, or link sharing.

These are workflow differences, not a claim that one app produces better-looking video. The best choice also depends on your computer, recording settings, and how much setup you want to manage.

Loom: a guided recording and sharing workflow

Loom supports screen-only, camera-only, or combined recordings, with microphone selection. Its Mac product page also describes system-audio capture, editing and clip stitching, captions and transcripts, and link sharing. That combination can suit tutorials, presentations, and other videos where a quick review-and-share process matters more than configuring a production scene.

Loom’s Mac and Windows pages state that the free Starter plan is limited to 25 videos per member and that recording more requires a Business plan. Plan limits and packaging can change, so check Loom’s current plan details before relying on that allowance.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Record a clean first take

  1. Choose whether to record the screen, camera, or both. For a tutorial, decide whether to capture one window or the whole display.
  2. Select the microphone you intend to use, and confirm it is connected before recording.
  3. Check your framing if the camera is on. Close or silence notifications and remove private information from view if you are sharing your screen.
  4. Make a short sample and play it back. Check that the intended screen, camera, and audio were captured before recording a long take.
  5. Use Loom’s editing and sharing workflow to review the finished clip and share its link.

OBS Studio: free local recording with more control

OBS Studio is free, open-source software for recording and live streaming on Windows, Mac, and Linux. Its feature set includes real-time video and audio capture and mixing, scenes built from sources such as window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards, plus an audio mixer with filters. That flexibility is useful when you want to combine inputs or adjust your layout and audio over time. It also means there are more choices to configure.

TechRadar’s review describes OBS as flexible and free, while noting that its interface may overwhelm newcomers and reporting minor glitches in its own review. Treat that as a reviewer’s assessment rather than a guarantee of how OBS will behave on your computer.

Set up your first OBS recording

  1. Install a compatible version. When the OBS download page was reviewed for this article, it listed version 32.2.2, Windows 10/11 support, and macOS 13.0+ support. These details can change; check the OBS download page for the current version and operating-system requirements.
  2. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS’s official quick-start guide recommends starting with this wizard to configure OBS for your intended use.
  3. Add the source you need. For a software demonstration, use a window or display capture; for gameplay, choose the appropriate game or capture source. Add a webcam or capture card only if you need that input.
  4. Check audio devices and meters. OBS defaults to capturing desktop audio and a microphone, but the guide recommends confirming that the meters move and the intended devices are selected. Record a brief test and listen back to catch missing, wrong, or unbalanced audio.
  5. Verify output settings, then test. Confirm the recording output options suit your intended video, make a short recording, and play it back before the real take. OBS’s guide advises testing for a few minutes; this also helps reveal whether your chosen settings strain your machine.

OBS documentation lists compatible hardware, but hardware compatibility alone does not guarantee a successful recording. Encoder choice, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity affect CPU requirements; consult the OBS system requirements and test on your own setup.

What equipment do you actually need?

You do not have to buy extra gear just to try either application. Start with the computer’s available inputs and the app’s device checks, then add equipment only to solve a specific limitation.

Common problems and what to check

The recording has no microphone audio

Confirm the intended microphone is selected and connected. In OBS, check whether the audio meter moves while you speak, then make a short test recording and listen to it. In Loom, select the connected microphone before recording and review a sample clip.

The screen or window capture is wrong

Check the selected display or window before starting. If the tutorial should show only one application, choose a window capture where appropriate and inspect the captured result in a short sample. Avoid exposing private windows or notifications.

The computer struggles during an OBS recording

Reduce the workload and test again. OBS’s requirements guidance identifies encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity as factors affecting CPU requirements. Close unnecessary applications or simplify the scene, then make another short recording before committing to a long session.

The chosen operating system is not supported

Requirements can change with releases. Check OBS’s download page for the current version’s platform support rather than assuming an older compatibility listing still applies.

When you want a YouTube channel live around the clock

Recording a video with Loom or OBS is different from keeping a YouTube live stream running continuously. OBS can record and stream, but a do-it-yourself stream depends on the computer, software setup, and internet connection staying available. For a pre-recorded YouTube stream that should keep running without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is #1 for this use case because it keeps a YouTube stream on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free. Nothing has to stay on at home; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, and support from the StreamNeo team. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera.
