Earthquake prayers can offer words for fear, grief, healing and recovery. The examples below come from Catholic, Reform Jewish and Islamic sources, and each reflects its own tradition or issuing authority; none is presented as a prayer required of everyone. Prayer can accompany practical help, but it does not replace earthquake safety steps.
Choose a prayer for the moment you are facing
There is no single prayer shared by every faith or community. The examples differ in who issued them and what they address: a specific supplication for a frightened person, prayers for people affected and responders, or a communal appeal for those mourning and rebuilding.
| Source and tradition | Form | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Catholic Health Association of the United States, Catholic institutional resource | Prayer for use after earthquakes | Injured people, bereaved families, responders, leaders and recovery |
| Reform Judaism | Prayers published after the Nepal earthquake | People affected and first responders |
| Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah, Egypt | Fatwa citing a supplication and scholarly recommendations | A person frightened by an earthquake or similar event |
| Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, in a 2016 USCCB statement | Invitation to pray a rosary | People killed in the Italian earthquakes, mourners and people rebuilding |
Catholic prayers for victims and recovery
A prayer for injured people, families and responders
The Catholic Health Association of the United States publishes “Prayer and Response to Earthquakes,” an institutional prayer that asks for healing for the injured, consolation for families who have lost loved ones, and protection and guidance for responders. It also asks that leaders support communities through a long recovery and that people respond with compassion. Read the Catholic Health Association prayer.
This is a usable Catholic resource, not a claim that the wording is a universal Catholic liturgical text. You can read it as written or use its concerns to shape a personal prayer for a particular person or community.

A rosary invitation after the 2016 Italy earthquakes
In a statement dated August 24, 2016, Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, then president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, invited Catholics to pray a rosary for victims of the earthquakes in Italy and others affected by disasters. He wrote: “We entrust the lives lost to our loving Mary, Mother of God, praying for the comfort of those mourning and the strength for those rebuilding.” The statement is a historical appeal tied to that disaster, not a general instruction that all readers must follow. Read the USCCB statement.
Reform Jewish prayers for affected people and responders
Reform Judaism published prayers for the people of Nepal and India after the 2015 Nepal earthquake. The material includes separate prayers for people affected and for first responders, asking for shelter, solace, endurance and strength to rebuild, as well as space to mourn, courage to heal and strength for those helping others. It is a Reform Jewish resource rather than a single formula for all Jewish communities. Read the prayers from Reform Judaism.

Islamic supplication for fear during an earthquake
In a fatwa dated September 4, 2022, Egypt’s Dar al-Ifta al-Misriyyah addressed what a person may say when frightened by earthquakes and similar events. It cites the supplication “هو الله، الله ربي لا شريك له” (“He is Allah; Allah is my Lord, with no partner”) and says scholars recommended supplication and prayer in such circumstances. This is guidance from that authority, not a claim that the wording is universally required of Muslims. Read the Dar al-Ifta fatwa in Arabic.

Spiritual support and physical safety address different needs. The U.S. Geological Survey advises people indoors during shaking to stay inside and use “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”; it rejects the outdated advice to head for a doorway. Its preparedness guidance also includes making a supply kit, securing tall furniture and heavy items, and knowing household utility shutoffs. Follow current local emergency instructions as well.
