Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow on February 2, 2026, and the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club recorded his prediction as “More winter.” That is the traditional Groundhog Day reading—not a scientific forecast of the season ahead.
What did Phil predict for 2026?
At the annual ceremony at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, Phil saw his shadow. According to the Groundhog Club’s 2026 event history, the appearance was at 7:25 AM under a crisp, clear sky, with the temperature at −3°. The club’s recorded prediction was “More winter.” These time and temperature details are the club’s event record, not an independent weather-station report.
What does seeing a shadow mean?
In the familiar folklore, a groundhog that sees its shadow signals six more weeks of winter or bad weather; if it does not see a shadow, the tradition points toward an early spring. The Groundhog Club connects the custom with European traditions associated with Candlemas, while noting that the tradition’s deeper origins are unclear. Its explanation is available on the club’s Groundhog Day background page.
Is Phil’s prediction a weather forecast?
No. Phil’s result is a traditional prediction made at a community ceremony, not a meteorological forecast. The club’s account establishes what happened at the event and how the custom interprets it; it does not show that the result determines winter or spring conditions in Pennsylvania or elsewhere in the United States.
