Souther co-wrote “Heartache Tonight” with Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Bob Seger. Henley’s dedication connected the performance to that shared songwriting credit and to Souther’s wider contribution to the Eagles’ work. The band’s September 18, 2024, memorial also named “The Best of My Love” and “New Kid in Town” among the Eagles songs Souther co-wrote.

Souther died on September 17, 2024, at age 78, according to his official biography. The Eagles’ memorial described him as “a brother, a friend and a brilliant collaborator” and a songwriter who helped shape the Southern California sound of the 1970s.
What Don Henley said at the Sphere
According to NME’s report of the concert, Henley introduced the dedication by saying, “I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge a couple of people.” He then named Souther as “the co-writer of that song who we lost three days ago” and added: “J.D. is someone you may know played a pivotal role in the Eagles. He wasn’t in the band but he certainly co-wrote some of our biggest hits.”

That distinction matters: Souther was a close musical collaborator and songwriter, but Henley explicitly said he was not an Eagle. The dedication honored his work without implying he had been a band member.

The tribute took place on September 20, 2024, at the Eagles’ first Sphere residency show in Las Vegas.
