For the Eagles’ studio albums in release-year order, start with Eagles (1972), then follow the sequence through Long Road Out of Eden (2007). There are seven studio albums in this chronology. A greatest-hits collection can make a shorter introduction, but it is not a studio album and does not belong between them.
This guide uses the years shown in the band’s official releases catalog rather than exact original release dates: the sources do not establish a complete, consistent set of day-and-month dates for all seven. You can listen to all seven in order, sample the first four albums through Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975, or choose a physical set that covers the first six. Each option serves a different purpose.
The Eagles studio albums in release order
The band’s official releases catalog lists these seven studio albums and their release years. Years are used here because the official sources do not establish a complete, consistent set of original day-and-month release dates for every album.
- Eagles (1972)
- Desperado (1973)
- On the Border (1974)
- One of These Nights (1975)
- Hotel California (1976)
- The Long Run (1979)
- Long Road Out of Eden (2007)
This is the order to use if you want to hear the studio-album catalog as it unfolded. The first six albums run from the band’s 1972 debut through The Long Run in 1979; Long Road Out of Eden, released in 2007, is the later studio album in the sequence. The gap between those listed release years does not create extra entries: the sequence has seven studio albums, and the 2007 title is the seventh.

If you are new to the band, there are two sensible ways to approach the list. For the complete studio catalog, play the albums from top to bottom without inserting compilations or live releases. If you have less time and want a selection of songs first, use Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 as a sampler, then return to the full-album sequence. The sampler is a shortcut, not a replacement for the seven-album chronology.
What counts as an Eagles album in this list?
The sequence is specifically for studio albums, not every album the Eagles have released. The official catalog also includes live albums, compilations, collections and anniversary editions. Those releases can be worthwhile listening, but placing one in this chronology would mix different kinds of releases and make the studio sequence harder to follow. A live album documents a performance, a compilation gathers previously released material, and an anniversary or deluxe edition may expand or repackage an existing album; none is an additional studio-album chapter in this list.
This distinction also helps explain why Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 is not listed as album number six. It is a compilation drawing from the first four studio albums, even though its title covers the years 1971–1975. Use the release years attached to the seven studio titles above when you want the band’s studio albums in order, and treat other catalog releases as optional listening paths alongside that sequence.
What was the Eagles’ first album?
Eagles, released in 1972, is the band’s first studio album and the starting point for the chronological list. The first entry is the self-titled album; it is not the greatest-hits collection or a later compilation.

How many studio albums did the Eagles make?
The sequence covered here contains seven studio albums: six released between 1972 and 1979, followed by Long Road Out of Eden in 2007. This count is limited to studio albums. It does not include live albums, compilations, collections or anniversary editions in the official catalog.
Why are the years listed instead of exact release dates?
The official catalog supplies the album years, but it does not provide a complete and consistent set of original day-and-month release dates for all seven titles. The year is therefore the dependable level of detail for comparing the whole sequence. A date more precise than the source material supports could give a misleading impression of certainty.
Choose a listening path
For the fullest introduction: listen chronologically
Begin with Eagles and continue through all seven albums in order. This gives you the full studio sequence rather than a selection of songs, and makes it easy to distinguish the early run from the later 2007 release. There is no need to choose a box set or deluxe edition to follow the chronology; the essential requirement is simply to listen to each of the seven listed studio albums in order.

If you are deciding how far to go at first, a practical starting goal is to listen through Hotel California (1976), then continue with the remaining albums when you want the complete chronology. That is a manageable first stretch of five albums, not a claim that the later titles are outside the catalog. The sixth entry is The Long Run (1979), and the seventh is Long Road Out of Eden (2007). If completeness matters, include both.

Chronological listening is the best fit if your question is “What order should I listen to Eagles albums?” It preserves the release-year sequence, includes the full studio-album catalog listed here and avoids confusing a compilation or expanded reissue with a new studio album. It is also the most time-intensive route because it means hearing seven complete albums rather than a selection drawn from the first four.
For a shorter sampler: try the greatest-hits collection
Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 is an optional sampler, not the next album after One of These Nights. An Eagles post dated January 22, 2026, says it draws from the first four studio albums: Eagles, Desperado, On the Border and One of These Nights. It does not serve as a summary of all seven studio albums, since the post describes its source material as those first four titles.
The band’s post characterizes the compilation’s sequencing as more like a studio album than a conventional retrospective. It also describes the early catalog’s strengths as including the tight harmonies of “Lyin’ Eyes,” the country-rock drive of “Take It Easy,” and the evocative songwriting of “Desperado.” That wording comes from editorial copy on the Eagles’ official site, not from a named individual. It offers a concise sense of why a listener might try the compilation, while the chronology remains the route for hearing the complete albums.
You can sample the compilation first if you want a shorter route to familiar songs, then return to the complete albums in order. This path trades chronological completeness for a quicker overview. It is useful when time is limited, but it will not let you hear every track on the seven studio albums or follow the studio catalog beyond the first four source albums.

In that January 2026 post, the band reported that the compilation had received RIAA quadruple-Diamond certification for sales of more than 40 million units, and had logged more than 500 nonconsecutive weeks on the albums chart since its debut. The same post reported that Hotel California had been re-certified 28× Platinum. These are figures reported by the Eagles in that post, not independently checked certification or chart-history calculations here. If you need to cite the current certification record independently, consult the RIAA directly.
For a physical set of the early albums: know the box set’s cutoff
Rhino’s The Studio Albums 1972–1979 is a six-CD set containing the first six albums in the list: Eagles, Desperado, On the Border, One of These Nights, Hotel California and The Long Run. Rhino lists the set’s release date as March 19, 2013, and identifies the product as a six-CD set. Its page includes an Amazon retailer link.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

The set’s title reflects its coverage: it ends with The Long Run (1979). It does not include Long Road Out of Eden (2007), so it is an early-catalog set rather than a complete collection of all seven studio albums. If you choose it for a physical copy of the first six, plan to get the 2007 album separately if you want every title in the chronology. Conversely, if you only want the 1972–1979 run on CD, the omission is a clear limit rather than a hidden extra.
Rhino’s product page gives a retailer link, but that does not establish a current price, current stock, or whether a particular retailer offer is available. Inventory and prices can change, so check the seller before buying. The existence of the product page should not be taken as a guarantee that the box set is currently in stock.

Hotel California is the fifth studio album in the chronology, released in 1976. It is a useful first-pass milestone because the suggested “listen through Hotel California” route covers the first five entries, while still leaving two studio albums to complete the sequence. If you stop there temporarily, the next titles are easy to pick up: The Long Run (1979), followed by Long Road Out of Eden (2007).
The Eagles’ January 2026 post reported that Hotel California had been re-certified 28× Platinum. That is a band-reported certification figure from the post, rather than a separate verification in this guide. It adds context for the album’s place as a prominent milestone, but it does not change the release order or turn the album into the end of the studio catalog.
A deeper listen to One of These Nights
For listeners who want more than the standard album, the Eagles announced on March 10, 2026, a One of These Nights Deluxe Edition released May 1, 2026. The announced formats are 3-CD/Blu-ray and 3-LP. The contents include a new album mix and an unreleased recording of a 16-song concert at Anaheim Stadium in 1975.
This edition is for depth on one album, not chronological completeness: it expands the 1975 title rather than adding an eighth studio-album entry. It also differs from the Rhino set in scope and format. Rhino’s six-CD box covers six separate studio albums from 1972 through 1979; the deluxe edition focuses on One of These Nights and adds concert material and format options. The 3-CD/Blu-ray and 3-LP formats are the announced choices; the announcement does not establish prices, current inventory or which format will suit a particular playback setup.
Check current availability before buying, as stock can change. The announced release date has passed, but the announcement alone does not verify present-day stock or retailer terms. If your priority is to hear the band’s studio albums in order, the standard sequence is enough; consider this edition only if you specifically want a more detailed presentation of the 1975 album and the recorded Anaheim Stadium concert.

Quick guide: which route fits?
| Listening option | What it covers | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seven-album chronology | All seven studio albums, from Eagles (1972) to Long Road Out of Eden (2007) | Hearing the complete studio sequence in release-year order | Requires listening to seven full albums rather than a sampler |
| Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 | Selections drawn from the first four studio albums, according to the Eagles’ January 22, 2026 post | A shorter sampler before exploring full albums | Does not cover all seven studio albums and is not the next chronological studio title |
| The Studio Albums 1972–1979 | The first six studio albums on six CDs; does not include the 2007 album | A physical set of the 1972–1979 run | One additional studio album, Long Road Out of Eden, is needed for the complete sequence; check current stock |
| One of These Nights Deluxe Edition | Expanded edition with a new album mix and a 16-song 1975 Anaheim Stadium concert recording; announced in 3-CD/Blu-ray and 3-LP formats | A closer look at the 1975 album and a live performance from that year | It focuses on one album rather than filling out the seven-album chronology; current availability is unverified |
The comparison comes down to four practical questions. For chronological completeness, choose the seven-album sequence. For less time commitment, start with the greatest-hits sampler, remembering that it draws from the first four albums only. For format and coverage, the six-CD Rhino set is the physical option described here, but it stops in 1979. For extra depth on one title, the One of These Nights deluxe edition adds a new mix and a 1975 concert recording in announced formats.
