EA said the decision was part of a shift to focus creative resources on its most significant growth opportunities; the company did not provide a more detailed project-specific explanation in the cited reporting.
What did EA cancel and close?
The canceled project was an open-world action game based on Marvel’s Black Panther. Cliffhanger Games, the Seattle-based studio working on it, had been opened in 2023 to develop the title, according to Game Developer.
EA confirmed the cancellation and studio closure in May 2025, as reported by GameSpot and GamesBeat.
Why did EA cancel the Black Panther game?
EA Entertainment president Laura Miele told staff the company was aiming to “sharpen our focus and put our creative energy behind the most significant growth opportunities.” That is EA’s stated rationale. The cited reports do not establish a more specific reason tied to the game’s development, prospects, or production costs.

What happened to Cliffhanger Games staff?
The closure came with layoffs at Cliffhanger and cuts to EA’s mobile and central teams. GameSpot reported that the number of affected workers was unknown. Variety reported the total was fewer than 300 people and said EA was working to place affected employees in other teams. That figure is an upper bound for this round of cuts, not an exact headcount.
Miele said in the staff message: “These decisions are hard. They affect people we’ve worked with, learned from, and shared real moments with. We’re doing everything we can to support them — including finding opportunities within EA, where we’ve had success helping people land in new roles.”
