Dylan Sprouse and Callan McAuliffe’s interview is about The Duel, a darkly funny thriller in which a friendship ruptures over betrayal and a challenge to fight to the death. The actors frame the story in two ways at once: as a critique of masculinity and as a love story about loyalty between friends.
What is The Duel about?
In the film’s premise, Colin (Sprouse) has an affair with Woody’s girlfriend. Woody (McAuliffe), unwilling to settle for ordinary revenge, challenges his close friend to a gentleman’s duel to the death. As the duel approaches, their friends get drawn into the conflict and the group’s relationships are tested.

The official description calls the film a darkly funny thriller and a “killer comedy.” The interview also characterizes it as an “anti-buddy” comedy—a story about close friends whose bond is pushed toward an extreme, violent test.
What did Sprouse and McAuliffe say about masculinity?
McAuliffe described the film as “both a celebration of and a condemnation of masculinity.” That tension captures its potential double reading: the duel can expose macho pride and destructive bravado, while the story can also make loyalty, honor, and commitment between friends feel compelling.

Sprouse offered a more affectionate framing: “I think that this movie is a love story between friends.” The two interpretations need not cancel each other out. As McAuliffe put it, “There’s a real tendency to fall into false dichotomies when interpreting a movie, especially one like this.” These are the actors’ readings, rather than a single required interpretation for viewers.
Why did the actors join the film?
McAuliffe said he had been interested in the history of dueling for a long time. Sprouse said the script and his friendship with the film’s writers-directors, Justin Matthews and Luke Spencer Roberts, helped draw him to the project. He also served as an executive producer. The interview includes discussion of the actors’ experience working with Matthews and Roberts.
