Rylee Arnold has said she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at 15, during dance season. She has described the diagnosis as overwhelming, the early adjustment as a steep learning curve, and managing glucose around rehearsals as a practical challenge. Her account is a personal story, not medical advice.
Arnold was diagnosed in the middle of dance season
In a first-person interview with Women’s Health published November 12, 2024, Arnold recalled: “I was 15 years old and in the middle of my dance season when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.” She said she spent three days in the hospital and worried about whether she would be able to dance again.
In an ABC News report published May 13, 2024, Arnold reflected on three years since her diagnosis, calling it one of the hardest periods of her life and a major learning curve.
How she described learning to manage diabetes
Arnold said her early routine involved finger-prick blood glucose checks and insulin injections. Later, she began using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM), which she said allowed her to view readings through an app. She named Dexcom in recounting that experience; the interview does not establish which device she uses now or endorse a particular product.

“It took me two years to get a handle on Type 1 diabetes,” she said in the Women’s Health interview. Her timeline describes her own adjustment, not a standard course of treatment or a timeframe readers should expect for themselves.
Rehearsals added a practical challenge
Arnold has said it was difficult to balance diabetes management with dance rehearsals. She recalled keeping fruit snacks nearby in case her glucose went low. That was her personal practice; food choices and responses to glucose changes should follow an individual’s care plan and advice from their health-care team.

The demands of a busy dance schedule help explain why her diagnosis felt uncertain at first. In her account, the question was not only how to manage a new condition, but whether it would keep her from dancing.

Arnold has also spoken about what she learned from living with Type 1 diabetes. ABC News quoted her saying, “Type 1 has taught me so much about myself and how I can also be a huge advocate to so many with Type 1 as well.” In the Women’s Health interview, she put her determination this way: “I want to prove it’s not a disease that can stop you from living your life.”
