The comments were reported by Parade from a New York Times interview published November 23, 2025—two days before Robert Irwin and Witney Carson won the show’s season 34 finale.
What Russell Crowe said about Robert Irwin’s dancing
In the interview, Crowe joked that Steve Irwin had a poor sense of musical rhythm despite his ability to read the rhythms of nature. As Parade reported Crowe’s words from the New York Times interview: “Although Steve could read the rhythms of the seasons and every living creature, he was absolutely not gifted with a sense of musical rhythm. In his hands, a tambourine became a deadly weapon.”

Crowe then said he thought Steve would be in awe of his son watching him dance: “I think he would watch Robert dancing and how he uses his body, the strength and poise, and he would be in awe of his son.”
Parade’s Grace Galante published the account on November 24, 2025, and identified the Times interview as having appeared the previous day. The quotations here are attributed to Crowe as reported by Parade; the original Times page was not directly reviewed.

Why Crowe’s connection to Steve Irwin mattered
Robert described Crowe as someone who had helped keep his father present in his life. “I’m really grateful that I have someone in my life who … he’s actually been there to, in a way, keep my dad alive in my life,” Irwin said, according to Parade.
Robert Irwin and Witney Carson won the 2025 finale
On November 25, Robert Irwin and professional partner Witney Carson won season 34 of Dancing with the Stars and the Len Goodman Mirrorball Trophy. ABC News confirmed the result in coverage published November 26. What the finalists danced
The finale gave each pair three dances: a judge’s choice quickstep, an instant cha cha, and a freestyle. ABC reported that Irwin and Carson changed their freestyle choreography because of Irwin’s rib injury.
What is known about the finale vote
No verified vote total for the season 34 finale is established by the cited coverage. ABC Press said in its April 22, 2025 season 34 announcement that the season 33 finale had received more than 32 million votes; that figure belongs to the previous season, not Irwin and Carson’s win.
