D’Wayne Wiggins, a vocalist and bassist who co-founded Oakland R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné!, died on March 7, 2025, at age 64. His family said he died after battling bladder cancer for more than a year, according to the Associated Press.

Wiggins died after a battle with bladder cancer, according to his family’s statement reported by the Associated Press. The family said he had been battling the disease for more than a year. The Los Angeles Times quoted the family saying that, during his illness, he “remained committed and present for his family, his music, his fans and his community.”

His role in Tony! Toni! Toné!
Wiggins was a founding member, vocalist, and bass guitarist in Tony! Toni! Toné!, the Oakland group he formed with his brother Raphael Saadiq and cousin Timothy Christian Riley. The Associated Press describes the group as part of the new jack swing movement, with music blending R&B, jazz, and gospel influences.
Albums and chart success
- The group released its debut album, Who?, in 1988.
- “Feels Good” reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to the Associated Press.
- House of Music, released in 1996, was the group’s fourth album and sold at platinum level, the Associated Press reported.
Music, mentorship, and community work
After Tony! Toni! Toné! disbanded in 1996, Wiggins pursued a solo career as a musician, performer, and producer, according to a remembrance from the Dwayne P. Wiggins Foundation. The foundation also credited him with creating Tony’s School of Music, a free summer program supporting young Oakland musicians with artist development and related programming.

The Associated Press quoted the family describing Wiggins as “a guitarist, producer, composer, philanthropist, mentor and founding member of Tony! Toni! Toné!” His work with young musicians was part of that wider community legacy.
