Box Office Mojo records the film’s domestic three-day weekend gross as $82,505,391, a figure also corroborated by The Numbers. The reporting window was March 1–3, 2024, and “domestic” here means the United States and Canada—not worldwide ticket sales. Box Office Mojo’s weekend record lists 4,071 theaters and a $20,266 per-theater average; The Numbers’ film record identifies Warner Bros. as the distributor.

Why was the opening also reported as $81.5 million?
The $81.5 million figure was not the later recorded total. In its March 3, 2024 report, the Associated Press described $81.5 million as the domestic Sunday estimate. The subsequent weekend record settled at $82,505,391. These are different reporting vintages: an early estimate and a later recorded result. The AP report also estimated $97 million internationally and $178.5 million worldwide at that time; those estimates cover territories beyond the domestic figure and should not be conflated with it.
What did audiences and premium-format viewers indicate?
Boxoffice Pro’s weekend analysis reported an A CinemaScore and a 5/5 PostTrak score for the film, alongside strong performance in premium formats and IMAX. How to compare the opening fairly
A box-office comparison is meaningful only when the figures use the same basis. Check whether each number is domestic or worldwide, whether it is an early estimate or a later recorded total, and whether the window is a three-day weekend or an extended holiday frame. Theater count and reporting dates also help explain differences between openings; a per-theater average is a separate measure from total gross.

Mary Parent, producer of both Dune films and chairman of worldwide production at Legendary, told the Associated Press: “It was made for the big screen and it feels like it’s being received as a cinematic event.” That is Parent’s interpretation of the reception, rather than a measured explanation of what drove ticket purchases.
