What does the album title mean?
Lipa said a friend introduced her to the phrase “radical optimism” a few years before the album, and that the idea stayed with her as she explored it in her life. She described it as “going through chaos gracefully and feeling like you can weather any storm.” In the same announcement, she named psychedelia, trip-hop and Britpop as musical histories she explored, saying their confident optimism and honesty shaped the attitude she brought to recording. Warner Music Ireland’s announcement quotes her explanation.

How did Lipa describe making the album?
In Warner’s release notice, Lipa said she wrote the album during a period of being single and that stories she brought into the studio inspired songs. She described a looseness and honesty that had not been present for her before, calling the sound “psychedelic pop” and saying it combines different sounds and musical breaks to create a visual world for listeners. Warner’s release notice includes those comments.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Lipa also connected the record to what she learned from touring, as well as trip-hop, Britpop and a growing interest in live instrumentation. She called the third-album experience “more cathartic” and said she wanted to experiment rather than follow a fixed formula. Read the Associated Press interview.
