Inspired by Josephine Baker and Chanel High Jewelry, the ensemble paired couture detail with the gala’s “Tailored for You” dress code.
What Dua Lipa wore to the 2025 Met Gala
The custom Chanel look combined three main pieces: an open-back black chiffon dress, a black sequin tweed jacket and a black organza cape. A long chiffon bow extended from the back of the gown. Across the outfit, crystals, pearls and feathers brought texture and shine to the otherwise black palette.
Vogue France describes the gown’s corset as fully embroidered in a diamond pattern, with black feathers at the basque. The jacket was embellished with pearls and crystals, while the cape carried black feathers and crystals.
How the Chanel look was made
Vogue reported that the complete look took 2,000 hours to make and included 45,000 embroidered elements. Vogue France reported the same totals. These figures refer to the Chanel ensemble, not just the dress.

The work involved several specialist ateliers: Montex embroidered the corset, gloves and belt; Lemarié made the cape; and Atelier Paloma contributed couture workmanship. Lipa summed up the scale of the preparation in Vogue’s May 6, 2025 video: “It takes a small army to get me ready for something like the Met Gala.” She also said, “The Chanel team has been working on this for 2000 hours.”
Why the look referenced Josephine Baker
Lipa and her stylist, Lorenzo Posocco, drew inspiration from Josephine Baker. Posocco described Baker as a figure who embodied dandyism onstage and off, linking her legacy to femininity, fearless expression and resistance. He saw the tweed jacket as a reference to Baker’s play with masculine and feminine styles, while the cape added a sense of performance and drama.

The 2025 Met Gala celebrated the Costume Institute exhibition Superfine: Tailoring Black Style and set “Tailored for You” as its dress code. The Baker reference connected Lipa’s dramatic Chanel styling to the evening’s focus on Black style and tailoring. The Associated Press characterized the look as black Chanel with an elevated flapper impression.
Chanel High Jewelry worn with the dress
Lipa paired the outfit with Chanel High Jewelry. Vogue France names the necklace Éternel N°5 and reports that its emerald-cut center diamond weighed 10.03 carats. She also wore Impression Florale earrings and the Tweed Icône Ruban ring, which combines 18-karat white gold, diamonds and cultured pearls. Vogue describes the necklace and earrings as white gold and diamonds.
