The first announced full-band appearance together in nearly 20 years coincided with a reissue of Decoration Day, the 2003 album Isbell helped make with the band.
What song did Jason Isbell play with Drive-By Truckers on Colbert?
They played “Hell No, I Ain’t Happy,” a song from Decoration Day. The performance aired on the Tuesday, December 2, 2025 edition of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, according to the show’s photo archive. Pitchfork’s report of the performance is titled “Drive-By Truckers and Jason Isbell Reunite to Play ‘Hell No, I Ain’t Happy’ on Colbert: Watch.”
When did Jason Isbell reunite with Drive-By Truckers?
The televised performance took place on December 2, 2025. It was described as their first “announced” appearance together in nearly 20 years—not their first time playing together since Isbell left the band in 2007. Reporting also notes earlier performances in other settings and configurations, including Isbell joining the band onstage in 2017 and 2021. The Colbert appearance establishes a one-time televised performance, not a permanent reunion or a return to the band.
Why did Isbell join the band for this performance?
The appearance was tied to The Definitive Decoration Day, a reissue campaign for the Truckers’ 2003 album. Isbell joined the band in 2001, and Decoration Day was the first of three albums he made with them. Patterson Hood said Isbell was integral to the record and welcomed his participation in celebrating its release. New West Records’ Drive-By Truckers press page features the release campaign and links to the performance and an order-and-stream destination.

- Midland intentionally nods to the wild west with Country music reminiscent of the 1970s and 80s, channeling idols Dwight Yoakam and Willie Nelson, both legends whom they previously opened for on the road
JamBase reports that the reissue includes a remixed and remastered version of the original 15-track album alongside a previously unreleased double live album, Heathens Live at Flicker Bar, Athens, GA – June 20, 2002. “Hell No, I Ain’t Happy” appears in both studio and live form on the release. What Patterson Hood said about the reunion
Hood told Georgia Public Broadcasting that Isbell agreed to take part and that he and Mike Cooley welcomed the idea. Hood said the band members had remained friends. Recalling the session, he said they arrived shortly before rehearsal and soundcheck, ran through the song a few times for camera work, and got a first take that sounded as good as the televised performance.
