Country singer and songwriter Drake White suffered a hemorrhagic stroke during a performance in Roanoke, Virginia, on August 16, 2019, after learning earlier that year that he had an arteriovenous malformation (AVM). He has since returned to performing, while describing recovery as ongoing: everyday walking and talking came back, but some left-hand and mobility tasks still take work.
What happened to Drake White?
White’s official biography says he collapsed onstage from a hemorrhagic stroke in August 2019. In a 2024 interview with the Brain & Life Podcast, he recalled that the rupture happened during a concert in Roanoke, Virginia, on August 16.

White said persistent headaches had led to an MRI in January 2019, which revealed an AVM. He described it as a mass of veins and arteries in the brain. His doctors had planned a series of embolizations, he said, but the AVM ruptured before that plan was carried out.
How did the hemorrhage unfold onstage?
White recalled losing words while singing, then experiencing weakness on his left side and other symptoms. He said EMTs were in the crowd, his group had prepared an information packet about his AVM, and a hospital was nearby. Emergency responders took him there, where, in his account, doctors stopped the bleeding. These details describe White’s experience, not a general emergency-care protocol.

What did recovery involve?
Rehabilitation and daily life
In a 2021 interview with Entertainment Focus, White estimated that he spent eight or nine months in extensive rehabilitation. He worked with physical and occupational therapists and gradually regained everyday abilities, including walking and talking.
In the 2024 interview, he said he could walk, talk and exercise, but that his left hand had less dexterity and tasks such as tying shoes or getting up from the floor remained difficult. “I’m able to maintain a normal life,” he said, while emphasizing the work behind that progress and crediting his physical and occupational therapists.

Music, family and faith
White has described returning to music as a powerful goal during rehabilitation. He also credited his therapists, family and faith as meaningful parts of his personal recovery. Those are his reflections on what helped him; they are not a prescription for other patients.
What does White’s story say—and not say—about AVMs?
White’s account is one person’s experience, not a guide to predicting or treating an AVM. In the Brain & Life interview, neurosurgeon Dr. Zomorodi said decisions depend on weighing the risk of an AVM bleeding against the risks of treating that particular lesion. The relevant factors include its anatomy and nearby neurologic structures. White also recounted receiving an individualized rupture-risk estimate during his own planning; that figure should not be taken as a general AVM risk rate.

Did Drake White return to performing?
Yes. White told Entertainment Focus in 2021 that he resumed performing after rehabilitation, including a show in Austin, though the pandemic disrupted touring. His official biography later says he embarked on The Optimystic Tour. It also identifies SPARK as his 2016 debut album and lists four Top 40 hits.
