The core numbered Super Saiyan progression is Super Saiyan → Super Saiyan 2 → Super Saiyan 3. In the later story progression, Goku reaches Super Saiyan God, followed by Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan—usually called Super Saiyan Blue. Blue Kaio-ken adds a technique to Blue, while Ultra Instinct belongs outside the numbered Super Saiyan sequence. Super Saiyan 4 is a separate, GT-associated branch.
This guide orders the prominent forms by their story progression and relationship to the main Super Saiyan sequence. It is not a complete ranking of every Saiyan state across anime, manga, films, and games: official summaries establish key forms and some relative comparisons, but do not provide one exhaustive taxonomy or power scale.
The main Super Saiyan forms, in order
1. Super Saiyan
Super Saiyan is the foundational transformation for the numbered sequence. In the Android/Cell story, Gohan maintains the form during everyday life after training with Goku in the Room of Spirit and Time. The official Gohan character showcase describes this period as part of his preparation for the Cell Games.
2. Super Saiyan 2
Gohan reaches Super Saiyan 2 at the Cell Games after releasing his inner rage. The official showcase describes it as transcending Super Saiyan and notes the crackling, lightning-like energy around the user. Read the official Gohan showcase.

The official story summary describes it as more powerful than Super Saiyan 2 and as rivaling Majin Buu; that is a story-specific comparison, not a universal measurement against every later form. The official 42-panel story recap covers the transformation.
The later god forms
4. Super Saiyan God
Goku learns the secret of Super Saiyan God from Shenron and completes the transformation to face Beerus. This begins the god-form progression in the official recap. The Dragon Ball Super story summary recounts the sequence.

5. Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Super Saiyan Blue)
After training with Whis, Goku and Vegeta attain Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan, commonly called Super Saiyan Blue. The official recap places it after Super Saiyan God and describes it as more powerful than that form. “Blue” is an alternate name used in official material. See the official recap.
Blue Kaio-ken: a combination, not a numbered level
Blue Kaio-ken combines Super Saiyan Blue with the Kaio-ken technique. The official feature describes Kaio-ken’s red aura appearing over Blue’s blue aura. It is best treated as a technique combination or variation, not as a new numbered Super Saiyan form. The official feature on Goku’s forms discusses it.

Ultra Instinct is a separate category
Ultra Instinct -Sign-
Goku awakens Ultra Instinct during the Tournament of Power. The official feature calls Sign an incomplete version of the technique used by the gods and says it cannot be maintained for long. The official Goku forms feature explains this distinction.
Ultra Instinct
The official recap describes Ultra Instinct as allowing the body to react automatically and evade attacks. Because the source presents it as a technique or state, rather than another numbered Super Saiyan level, place it beside—not after—Super Saiyan 3 or Blue in a strict numbered list. The official Tournament of Power recap describes Goku’s awakening.

Super Saiyan 4: the separate GT branch
Super Saiyan 4 should be included in an all-franchise overview, but not forced into the numbered progression above. The official site associates Goku and Vegeta’s first demonstrations of the form with Dragon Ball GT and ties it to the Great Ape power within them. The official forms feature discusses the form; the official series chronology lists GT and Super as separate franchise milestones. Those sources do not resolve broader debates about continuity or canon status.

| Entry | How to place it |
|---|---|
| Super Saiyan | First form in the numbered progression |
| Super Saiyan 2 | Second numbered form; Gohan’s Cell Games breakthrough |
| Super Saiyan 3 | Third numbered form; Goku unveils it in the Majin Buu story |
| Super Saiyan God | Later god form, before Blue in the official recap |
| Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan (Blue) | Later god form attained after training with Whis |
| Blue Kaio-ken | Blue combined with a technique; not a new numbered tier |
| Ultra Instinct -Sign- and Ultra Instinct | Technique or state, separate from the numbered Super Saiyan sequence |
| Super Saiyan 4 | Separate GT-associated branch |
Official sources make selected relative comparisons, but do not establish a comprehensive cross-form ranking or numeric multiplier for every entry. The useful ordering is therefore about story placement and category, not a single ladder that treats every transformation and technique as equivalent.
